Ask One-fifth Per Year. Under the provisions of the second | five-year program, the items would be appropriated for at the rate of one-fifth of the total cost per annum. This would call for an annual appropriation of $1,150,000. Since the second pro- gram is specified to have no effect upon the first uncompleted building schedule, the items as yet unappropriated for in the initial program which board mem- bers have indicated they would desire would be pro-rated over the second five-year period. These items, therefore, would require an annual appropriation of $1,006,150. Thus, to bring the District’s school sys- tem up-to-date by means of the two five-year building programs, Congress will be asked to appropriate $2,156,150 a year over and above the school sys- tem's operating expenses of approxi- mately $11,000,000 per annum, for the five years from July 1, 1930, to June 30, 1935. A week ago, Dr. Carusl asked the taxpayers to express, through their re- spective citizens' associations, whether they would approve the expenditure of $3,000,000 a year for five years for school building purposes, if the total school appropriations each year did not exceed one-third of the total revenue of the District of Columbia. Dr. Carusi told the citizens that if they should answer his question negatively the Board of Education would discontinue its efforts to bring about adequate school facilities by its present fight for a higher percentage of the District’s revenues. The citizens’ responses now are being awaited by the school author- ities. . “Lucky,” & police dog owned by John Schweighart, swam from Albany to New York in 44 hours 52 minutes, 5 hours shorter than the time made by a man. “‘TJHAT TO GIVE HIM” a problem . solved . . . seemingly, quite is easily in Peoples Drug Stores’ Cigar Departments. DR One tale has it that in the fifteenth century coffee was started on its jour- ney around the world by one Gemel Eddin, a Mahometan high priest, who introduced the exhilarating berry into his monastery in Arabla. He had tasted the berry concoction during his travels in Persia, decided it would be just the thing to kee& his priests awake through their all-night services and so brought a quantity of the coffee beans back Eggs Boiled Just Right. There seems to be no end of the clever and convenient electrical de< vices, the latest of which is one for egg- boiling. It consists of a glazed earthen pan-shaped device, with its own elec- trical unit. If you want your eggs boiled three minutes, you place in the pan three teaspoons of water. If four minutes four teaspoons of water. And so on, one teaspoon for each minute, You then place your eggs in the de- vice and connect the current. The water will vaporize and cook the eggs, and when completely vaporized the current will shut itself off. No more watching or wi g.
