Development in Washington of a sanitarium for tuberculous children, which has been proposed to Congress, was indorsed by the Washington Cham- ber of Commerce last night at its ses- sion at the Willard Hotel. Action was taken on a motion by Wallace Hatch | of the public health committee. ‘The chamber also reiterated its rec- ommendation to Congress urging early enactment of legislation providing for merger of the Washington transporta- tion lines and supporting the merger as approved by the stockholders of the interested companies, city officials and local trade groups. Lieut. Walter Hinton, who made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic in the NC-4, making a brief report as a member of the chamber’s aviation committee, strongly indorsed the de- velopment of the local municipal air- port on the Gravelly Point site and | urged rejection of other proposed sites, ‘ which, he said, might delay final action on the location as approved by local officials On motion by Col. William O. Tufts, the chamber again voiced approval of the Gravelly Point site. Opposes Other Sites. Lieut. Hinton disapproved of sug- gestions of other sites several miles from Washington, pointing to the ad- vantages of the site so near the center of the city and which would have pro- visions for the landing of both land and sea planes. Ross P. Andrews also spoke V/ in favor of the Gravelly Point site. The chamber voted its support of the proposal, indorsed by the Board of Education and the District Teachers’ Council, which would make possible leave of absence on part pay for teachers of the public school system while continuing their education or away from the city on other approved projects. The matter was presented by N . E. Palmer of the public schools com- mittee. 22N Representative Chalmers of Ohio, member of the rivers and harbors com- mittee of the House, delivered an ad- dress on “Some Lessons for America Drawn From the Orient,” in which he pointed out the benefits to this country from restricted immigration and the operation of American tariff schedules. He also spoke in support of the pro- posal to open up the Great Lakes to sea-going transportation by making the St. Lawrence River an outlet to the sea for ships. N Dr. Devia Al Revertsen of tne | NI T of the need for early enactment of § l every one wtll make a practtca e nfomreneib ety Reviving the Apprentice System. The National Association of Mer- chant Tailors of Great Britain has taken the stand that the future of their trade depends upon the revival of the apprentice system. Encouraged by their parents, boys will take a posi- tion as an errand boy, which probably has no future, because the pay is greater than for one who is learning a trade, whereas the young man who is equipped with a knowledge of a trade will in the end receive greater compensation, a fact which is lost sight of for the time. It is said that the national supremacy of Great Britain's clothing trade is suffering for the lack of good tailors. With this in view it has been agreed by the association to establish a fund from which grants of a sum equaling $150 will be made to all young men who mastered the trade and have passed a workmanship examination.
