MACHINE MAY" AID EVE FATIGUE RELIEF Instrument Detects Flicker in Light Which May Be Photographed. By the Associated Press. ITHACA,” N. Y., December 20.— A new field for mitigating eye fatigue 15 announced at Cornell University in the development of an instrument which detects the flicker in light. Before the eye of this instrument what may appear to the human eye as a steady glow of light becomes a flicker, every wave of which is recorded in lines that may be transcribed to & fi!o(ngmph or studied visually Dr. Frederick Bedell of Cornell per- fected the device, which is called an oscilloscope. “The flicker in the light given by an alternating current lamp,” he says, “is often of sufficient magnitude to be ob- vious to the casual observer. A quick turn of the eye makes one conscious of it. Even when not obvious, the flicker is not infrequently a source of uncon- scious annoyance.” . In_the usual type of city house light Dr. Bedell finds this flicker running at the rate of about 120 a second. “The method of studying light vari- ations by means of the oscilloscope,” he sa “has been developed only re- cently; thus far no extensive applications of the method have been made. The experimental psychologist may find in 1t & means for the study of eye fatigue: the practical engineer, a means for se- Jecting the lamps to be used in cases where flicker is most likely to be ob- jectionable, particularly in low-fre- quency circuits. “A study of the wave form of can- dlepower is in progress. e".?l?t instrument is a cathode tube with s wide top somewhat like the shape of a parachute. The flickers are caught by a photoelectric cell, which trans- mits them into electrical energy that in turn causes the cathode tube to shoot a stream of electrons against its para- chutershaped top. This stream is visi- ble on the top of the tube as a moving green spot of light. Tire light fluctuates according to the flicker. It also can be made to record sound fluctuations and has registered measurement of pitch of musical tone to one part in five thousand, which is five times as accurate as the best record of a piano tuner's ear. By the Assoclated Press. KANSAS CITY, December 20—A divorce, asked by the Missouri Savings Bank and Trust Co. here as guardian for George H. Heinlen, a shell-shocked World War veteran, was granted Tues- day by Judge Willard P. Hall in Circuit Court on the ground of general indig- nities. Heinlen, who has been confined to a Government hospital In Knoxville, Jowa, since February, 1924, suffered injuries in the w ch, investigators said, resulted in insanity. Heinlen was married in Liberty, Mo., in 1923, and a daughter was born after he was committed to the hospital. Half of his Government compensation of $100 a month has been going to his_wife. The unusual case, instigated by the bank, was ordered by the Probate Court ufter the case had been investigated by the Kansas City Chapter of the Red Cross. By the divorce decree the child will be given the share of Heinlen's com- pensation that heretofore has gone to Mrs. Heinlen. Under Missouri law, a sane person cannot sue an insane person for di- vorce.
