Receptions at White House " And Diplomatic Breakfast MarkEarlyDaysof NewYear Other Colorful Events Listed During the Week. Attractive Program Embraced in Future 1 Ggie]ulés-—Special Notes. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. WO White House receptions and a cabinet dinner, a diplomatic breakfast and the cabinet New Year day reception were crowded into last week and flanking these events on every side were dances, dinners, luncheons and teas and even then the social calendar did not seem overfilled. The reception at the Congressional Club in hofer.of Mrs. Coolidge stands out from other events quite dinstinctly fof Ahen only the First Lady of the Land, the Second Lady of the Land, members’ wives and the members of the club were guests. BOTH White House receptions, that on New Year day and the one Thursday night in_honor of the judiciary, were events to add_color and interest to social history of which there should be much in future years—with such stirring events constantly happening and society con- stantly taking on a more important atmosphere. | il and Mrs. Coolidge rest from their social obligations this week, for on Tuesday night they dine with the Secretary of War and Mrs. The Supreme Court dinner which usually follows the judicial reception by a week will not this season take place until Thursday, January 26. HE President and Mrs. Coolidge will leave at the end of the week for Havana, and preceding them to Cuba is the greater part of the diplomatic corps, most of the Ambassadors and Ministers going to at- tend the annual Pan-American Conference, while the Minister of Hun- gary and Countess Szechenyi and their daughter are going because the count is accredited to Cuba as Minister of Hungary, just as several of the other Ministers are sent to serve at two capitals.” Indeed Washington will be almost bereft of the higher ranking diplomats until the conference is over. THE cabinet ladies will hold their first Wednesday afternoon at home of the season this week, most of them having to assist the wives of the Assistant Secretaries in their husbands’ departments. Mrs. Hoover will introduce a néw custom in her Wednesday afternoon at home when she will have the wives of Senators and Representatives in Congress from California’ to assist her. Representatives Florence P. Kahn, the woman Representative from the fourth district; Mrs. Hiram Warren Johnson and Mrs. Samuel Morgan Shipstead, wives of the senior and junior Senators; Mrs, Curry, daughter of Representative Charles Forest Curry, and the wives of the nine other Representatives from that State will be in the list. TOMORROW night the President and Mrs, Coolidge will attend the annual charity ball for the benefit of the Children's Hospital, given at the Willard Hotel, when they will look from their box of state upon the cream of Washington society, both official and unofficial. The af- fair will be preceded by many brilliant dinner parties and this ycar the ball will have a larger attendance than ever before, it EDNESDAY night the assembly ball will be given at the Mayflower Hotel, and while it will lack the presence of the President and Mrs Coolidge it will be a stately and heautiful event replete with the more glamorous side of early American society and not of the “blazing the trail” and “covered wagon” period. THP. announcement of the betrothal of Mlle, Setsu Matsudaira, eldest daughter of the Ambassador of Japan and Mme Matsudaira, to Prince Chichibu, brother of the Emperor of Japan and second son of the late Emperor Yoshihito, is of much interest in Washington where the youthful Mile, Matsudaira has made many friends for herself. No snnouncement has been made from the embassy and the official an- nouncement is expected from Tokio. Mlle. Matsudaira, though not yet old encugh to he presented 1o society, has assisted her mother at the Jatter's days home” and lva‘:mfirn‘\ixrmly accompanied her to less formal parties in Washington, fatsudaira is the third member of her mother’s family 1o be selected as fiance 10 & member of the imperial family. Mme. Matsudaira’s eldest sister fs the wife of Prince chimoto, and their daughter, Mme. Matsudaira's niece, is the wife of Pringe Yi of Korea. Mme.
