R ‘UTAH DRY WORKERS LOOM AS SMITH FOES $oom for Governor Leads in Po- litioal Activities of State. Coeclal Dispatch to The Star. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, January %.—Al Smith’s bandwagon has been leading in political noise in Utah for ®cveral months. Apparently, Gov. Emith will get the Democratic dele- Rites to the national convention fromn tiis State. 1If the vote were now, he Would get them without question. Utah i decidedly dry, however, and d:y workers are getting aroused. A complete change of heart is not at all unlikely. James H. Moyle, national commit- tceman, is not a Smith supporter, and there are other active ocrats in Utah who think it unwise to support him. Gov, George H. Dern and Sen- a‘or William H. King have taken no siand thus far regarding any national candidate, but both are dry and will be up for re-election this Fall. I do not consider it probable that either will make any move that might dis- credit him with dry voters. Senator King (Democrat) will be re mominated if he wants the nomina- tion, and it is still a big guess as 0 ‘whom the Republicans will nominate to oppose him. Many are in the field. Herbert Auerbach appears promi: nent in the press here. Ernest Bam- berger, national committeeman, has a strong following and may get the nomination. He was defeated by Xang six years ago, however, a fact ‘which will not help his case. Willilam Spry, former Governor of Utah, but now commissioner of the General Land Office, and J. Reuben Clark may loom strong for the nomi- nation later on. It has been sug- gested, however, that their absence from the State on Government work ‘will react against them. Senator King is rounding out his second term in the Senate and is the strongest cam- paigner in Utah. He will make a strong candidate, if nominated. FRANK P. STEWART. G.0. P. IN CONNECTICUT FAVORS DARK HORSE Rank and File Prefer Hoover Next . to Coolidge, but Leaders Give Him No Support. Special Dispatch to The Star. HARTFORD, Conn., January 7.— Connecticut Republicans, strong for Coolidge even after his August an- mouncement, are now more or less at sea. Hoover, as a representative of the Coolidge policies, appeals to the rank and file of the party more than anybody else in sight. Unable to have Coolidge, Hoover seems to them getting as close to him as possible. To the party leaders—and they are in Connecticut—Hoover tl: something of a persona non grata. They feel that he did too much flirt- ing with the Democrats in 1920 and that he is not a Republican of sufi- clently long party service to justify ;7 to_the place. Low- den, with Coni it support for President in 1920 and for Vice Presi- dent in 1924, is no longer a favorite with the Republicans, whom he has alienated by his reliefattitude. , The Republican ders have no , presidential candidate, but, with Cool- idge out, they indicate that they will | he satisfied with some dark horse of the conservative type. There ix no reason to believe that there will be any depature from the -custom of sending an uninstructed delegation (o the national convention. Gov, Smith of New’York will ac- eording to present. indicagions. have the unanimous vote of Conneeticut in the Democratic national convention. Chairman Walsh of the Democratic State committee says that Smith will carry the State in November, something that the Republicans don't concede, of course, as Connecticut has given its electoral vote to the Re- publican ticket at every election since the second election of Cleveland in T ican ool J912.. when bl 8| . wi =35 lo:oll‘ to Wilson.
