CHICAGO.—Women truly have won their place in the sun In directing American library work. The far-flung activitles of the Amer- ican Library Association are super- vised principally by women. From the big, sunny executive offices in Chlcago to the scattered branches of the organ- ization in this country and abroad women sit in executive positions. Carl B. Roden, librarian of the Chicago Public Library, is president of the assoclation, and the ruling execu- tive. Carl H. Milan, is secretary, but from there down, women predominate. The executive assistant of the Board of Education for Librarianship fis Harriet E: Howe. Emily V. D. Howe Is editor of the myriad publications of the association. Julia Wright Merrill heads the library extension department. Her territory 1s the whole United States and her especial task helping develop library service for the estimated 50,000,000 persons in the country without it. Miss Helen Burling cdits the “Reading With a Purpose” courses of the association. Miss Jessle Van Cleve is the speclallst in children's books. An interesting tale of the efforts of American women abroad fs the story of the founding of the Paris Library School as Miss Sarah C. N. Bogle, assistant secretary and di- rectress, relates it. The American committee advanced funds to maintain a school for two years. Miss Bogle was called from her Chicago headquarters to direct the effort and she spent several months in Paris in 1923, The cchool. she said. has won universal commendation from virtually all countries.
