o FraaAN) G0OD RAIL BONDS SCORE ADVANGES _Government Issues React. New York Tractions Are Active Today. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK. December 1.—Bond Prices today reflected the general en- thusiasm for securities which has been exhibited in the stock market and has overflowed the list of semi-specula- tive investments. The easier rates money, and the steadily declining Average return on Government, muni- clpal and bonds legal for savings’ banks in Eastern States, make a com- bination of cireumstances very favor- able to higher prices at the beginning of the last month of the when there is always a large reinvestment @emand. Today there was quite a pick-up in & frumber of very good railroad bonds that have been neglected and reac- tionary for a week or s0. Among them were Erie refunding 5s, which were again above 98; Rock Island 4%s back to 97, New Haven convertible s at 114, Missouri-Kansas-Texas adjust- ments at a new high for the year, and ‘Western Maryland 4s, Southern Rail- way 4s and Chicago Great Western showing an average gain of 1§ of a point. These bonds were all influ- enced by the buoyamcy of stocks. 41 Per Cent Rails Gain. Another group included the new 415 per cent rails which were also slus- Rish in the latter part of October. Union_Pacific 41%s sold down to par esterday and today were at 101. Mo- le & Ohio new 41,8 were up to 99, Bhowing the largest premium : they were issued two months First mortgage 4 per cent rails Atchison, Northern Pacific, Pennsyl- vania and New York Central systems were all strong. i The United States Government mar- kel as frequently happens, reacted e sharply early from vesterday’s rise, though all of the Treasury is- Sues later sold above the previous day's closing. Local traction bonds and also Chi- cago Railway bs were more than ordi- marily active. There was not much of importance in the industrial list. Pub- le utilities were marked up fraction- ally.’ The-offering today of a 5% per cent public utility preferred stock is another evidence of the increasing ability of utility corporations to ob- tain capital on attractive terms. An- other instance of this is the proposal 1o retire one of the long term 6 per cent debentures at 110. Retirement in Prespect. There are outstanding a large num- ber of such bonds of holding com- panies now selling between 106 and ! 108 and all redeemable at 110. Next year will undoubtedly witness the re- tirement of this type of bond and the Teplucement with a 5 per cent coupon. ‘The foréign market did not present any new features. All of the Argen- tine §s were active and strong with the average of this group at the high- est of the year. For the first time Argentine government securities ap- peared to be well distributed. Nor- way 6s, Belgian 6s, French 73s and Peruvian 7148 were strong. The Ger- man list indicates the cessation of liq uidation without, however, any sign of public enthusiasm for this group even at the prevailing attractive in- come returns. NEW ENGLAND PHONE.
