CHICAGO, December 1.—Wheat, corn and live stock monarchs come and go at the international live stock exposition, but “Spot,” a 7- year-old working collle from the rolling hills of Scotland and New Hampshire, probably wins the most applause. T, THURSDAY, DECEMBER T, 1927. . CARRIERS HELPING YULETIDE SHOPPER Some Cut Fares, Others Campaign for Business During Slack Hours. BY J. C. ROYL Special Dispatch to The Star. EW YORK, December 1.—Busi- [ness men all over the Nation are )day te encourage using every effort not from sen- the spirit of Chris y timent ut as a sound, id business asset. This move is expecially active in the public utility companies, nota- bly the common carriers. Thousands of street raflway men were instructed today to cultivate the Christmas spirit, to show courtesy and forbearance with holiday shop- ing crowds, to use every effort to aid s burdened with bundles and to ma traflic as speedy and safe as possible. ; nts of every type are aiding n companies in these ef- realize what benefit can om safe and speedy \opping crowds and a check to sales traffic conges- san prove. The: uctions given by the Phil- isit Co., operating a time of frayed nerves and sorely tried patience on the part of the riding public. The company appeals to every employe to be especially watchful of the public need, tolerant of the criticism of our riders and vigilant in_the battle we must wage against adverse weather and countless interruptions to traffic.” The transportation men and mer- chants are making a strong country- wide appeal to the public to shop be- and 4 pm. At that time the load on the transportation stems is lowest. The volume of siness in the stores also is lower than before or after these hours, es- pecially in the y season. In some citi transportation companies are carrying passengers in e S CCUARAN (EEE" 10 0% BURE the shopping districts during the 10- to-4 period for less than the regular fare. In one great Pacific Coast cen- ter, the fare has been cut during those hours from 10 to § cents. In many others the fare has been reduc- ed from 7 and 8 to § cents. Many Charge Accounts Added. In the last year there have been hundreds of thousands of charge ac- counts added to the books of the de- partment stores. Possessors of these accounts have fallen into the habit of having goods delivered instead of car- rying them home personally. This has added to street traffic congestion, Many stores are experimenting with night deliveries where such are pos- sible. At least, they are carrying their mall and freight and express AS USUA shipments through the streets at night. Near the big cities, suburban de- liveries have been facilitated by re- distributing stations and warehouses. Huge truck trains carry out goods to the redistributing stations each night. There the suburban trucks pick up their loads for each special district, The need for drastic measures for the protection and expediting of shop- pers and the delivery of goods is thoroughly apparent, from the volume of money being drawn from the finan- clal centers for “window dressing” all over the country, Window dressing does not refer to window display alone, but the preparations for a huge trade. This month retail buying will prob- ably be 7 to 10 per cent larger than during December, 1926. Iz B., C. & A. BOAT SALE AROUSES BALTIMORE Association of Commerce Consider- ing Taking Over Operation of River Steamer Lines. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, December 1.—The Baltimore Association of Commerce is considering taking over the operation of the boat lines which the Baltimore, Chesapeake & Atlantic Rallway has announced it will abandon. Vice President Country of the Baltl- more, Chesapeake & Atlantic declared the company will sell its fleet under a foreclosure, The railway will continue the Baltimore-Love Point ferry line, but will drop all its other boat lines. including those on the Piankatank, Pocomoke, Occahannock, Choptank, ‘Wicomico and Nanticoke Rivers. Over $2,600,000 has been sunk in those lines, he said, and he expressed the situation in this way: “We are not abandoning the steamship lines; it is the public that is abandoning them.” Country sald small motor boats are cutting into the revenue of the boats, and motor trucks paralleling the rail lines are taking away revenue from that source. e The property, for' which &' fore- closure sale has beefi asked, includes 10 steamers, many wharves and the rall line from Claiborne to Ocean City, The sale was asked by the Chatham- Phoenix National Bank & Trust Co. of New York, trustee under the mortgage securing the bonds of the company. Interest from March 1, 1922, and including September 1, was re- ported unpaid on a $1,250,000 bond issue, amounting to $375,000. The ship lines and railway links have been operated in close relation to the Penn- sylvania Railroad, but the B., R. C. & A. has its own financial structure.
