CHICAGO, December 1.—The names of “Mike De Pike" Heitler, connected by police with West Side underworld activities, and Johnny Genaro, a caba- ret owner, came into the Chicago gang war investigation teday. LUVERNE, Ala., December 1.— Alabama’s fight against masked vio- lence came to an abrupt end here yes- terday following the acquittal of two men accused of complicity in hooded whippings, and a' controversy be- tween Attorney General Charlie C. McCall, the State Jaw enforcement de- partment and the Ku Klux Klan. Judge A. E. Gamble adjourned court today after the withdrawing by So- Heitor Calvin Poole of the State’s cases against 31 men remaining to| be tried for participation in a score of masked lashings in Crenshaw | County. | Poole, who has aided Mr. McCall in prosecuting the cases, said he was not willing to quash the cases, but asked that they be tabled “until such time as there is a different sentiment in _the county.” The remaining cases, the- solicitor explained, *“can be tried at any future term of court, or they may never be tried.” 3 ‘The collapse of the trials followed the withdrawal last night of Attorney General McCall from active participa- tion in_the prosecution, after he had charged the Klan with attempting to “quiet” him in his investigation of floggings. The attorney general had had charge of the inquiry that led to the indictments and in a statement accompanying his withdrawal he charged that “the State law enforce- ment dgpartment, as represented by {ts chief superyisor and sevegl of his assistants, has exhibited in my judg- msgt a frenzied desire to assist thel del llinois Treasury Has $933 of Bonus for Veterans Here There is in the treasury of the State of Illinois a total of $933 awaiting to be claimed by four men said to be residents of the istrict of Columbia, according to advices received today by the local National Guard from the adjutant general of Illinois. The money is due these men as the State bonus awarded veterans for their par- ticipation in the World War.
