The Advaniages and Disadvanta; a Tube's Oscillator Acdnn—-l’lrt' IL If it were not for the oscillator ac- tlon of a tube and its -hmt?wrp:r form the double function of oscillator and detector at the same time, the re- generative circuit in its usual forms ‘would be impossible. In the regenera- tive circuit. the oscillations produced by the oscillator action of the tube combine with the received oscillation to produce a stronger grid voltage variation, which results in the produc-} tion of a greater response in the plate eircuit of the tube. In such circuits the frequency of the local oscillation is controlled by tuning . adjustments which make it possible to adjust the local oscillations to the same fréquency to which the receiver circuit is tuned to receive a signal of a desired frequency or wave length. There are various ways of making these adjustments, but the tickles feed- back and the variometer tuned plate eircuit are by far the most common and popular methods. In regenerative circuits, then, this ability of the tube to act as an oscil- lator is a very desirable characteristic or property of the tube. Action in Superheterodyne. In a superheterodyne circuit a local oscillator is used to produce oscilla- tions of a frequency such that the combinations of the jocal oscillation with that of the oscillation of the incoming signal produces another ‘wave, through the principle of hetero- which is particularly suitable Reproduction Prohibited. of | the tube as an oscillator is absolutely necessary to efficient operation. The regenerative circuit is a very efficlent circuit in its way, but it has its limitations and disadvantages. Its distance range is limited and its selec- tivity in congested districts is not satistactory enough, In addition, that action of the tube as an oscillator causes the recelver at times to act as a miniature transmitter, which re- sults in the squeals heard in mllh- boring receivers when a regenerative set operator -does not tune hls re- ceiver with care, In this article we have can-(dend for the most part the advantages re- sulting from the tube's action as an oscillator. In tomorrow’s article we will see how this oscillator action causes many a radio designer and engineer to rack his brain in an effort to prevent the tendency of the tube to act as an oscillator.
