MOTOR CYCLE NEWS. Competing against & field of sixty- four of the crack riders of Europe, ‘mounted on machines representing the cream of motor cycle design, the In- dian team, comprising F. W. Dixon, Herbert Le Vack and Noel Brown, scored a clean-cut team victory for the American-made machine in the 226-mile senior tourist trophy race on the Isle of Man, June 16, 1921. W. Dixon finished second, 5. Le Vack took third place in and Brown crossed the tape in 4 The times made by both Dixon and Le Vack are over ten min- utes better than the winner's time of previous years. Dixon also scored the fastest lap of the race. The tourist trophy race is the most important event in the annals of motor cycle racing. and commands the atten- tion of every maker of motor cycles of importance throughout the world. This year's race marks the second time since its initial running, in 1909, that the Americans have been prominently vic- torious. -In 1911 the Indian team of Godfrey, Franklin and Moorhouse won first, second and third, respectively. Franklin is at present at the head of the engineering department of the Indian factory. The course used for the event consists in its entirety of winding mountain roads circling the Isle of Man, where the laws have been made such as to permit the running of the race on public highways. The race is run in six laps of thirty-seven and three-fourths miles each. The first, second and third plice men in, this year's race each averaged better than fifty-four miles per hour. ‘The Rev. Father Robert M. Botting of Dodge City, Kan., annually lays aside Lis robes of piety to undertake the pro- motion of the 300-mile national cham- plonship motor cycle race, and:is at the present time to be found acting in the capacity of secretary of the Dodge City Motor Speedway Association. ‘Under his able direction the race plans move smoothly, and it is expected that this year's event will witness the break- ing of several long-standing records. All the leading motor cycle: factories will have representative flelds of their best riders_in the line-up. That_the motor cycle for emergency medical cases has already proved its value and will be used to an even greater extent in the future was the statement made recently by Dr. George Carveth of Toronto, Canada. Dr. Carveth has ridden a motor cycle for twelve years, averaging about 10,000 miles per year, and frankly.states that he considers the -two-wheeled vehicle superior to the motor car for his pur- poses. *Not only that,” says the doc- tor, “but I consider the lighter vehicle more healthful because it affords the necessary exercise.” —_— Mme. Out of the approximately ninety ac- tive passenger automobile manufac- turers In the Unlted States, forty-five, or about half, have reduced their prices since May 1. In dollars the re- ductions range from $25 on the Ford to $2,000 on the Brewster, one of the most expensive cars produced in this country. The reductions, in per- centage, range from 5 per cent to 34 per cent. Analysis of the revislons made shows that in the high-grade car class price reductions have been compara- tively fewer than in the medium- grade division. Of the ninety-odd makes of passenger cars now in ac- tive production, sixteen list at $4,000 or more. Of these only five, or ap- proximately 30 per cent, have an- nounced lower prices. Out of about seventy-five makes listing under $4.000, forty manufacturers, or more than 50 per cent of those in this class, have made price reductions. To the majority of people who pay $4,000 or morTe for a motor car price is not an important consideration; and this, coupled with the fact that most manufacturers of cars In this class produce in limited quantities, under which it is difficult to benefit from reductions in cost enjoyed by jarger producers, accounts for the small number of high-grade car { makers who have reduced. There has been a steady demand for used cars, prices for which have also been substantially Teduced. Lower prices on new cars have been offset somewhat by the reduced allowances: on used-cars when offered for a trade-in by the retai] buyer. In other words, many who waited for the reductions of the past few months saved comparatively little owing to the lower valuation on their old_car. Good buylng power has been shown where prices have been reduced or where it was known that present prices and quality would be maintained. The Natlonal Automobile Chamber of Com- merce figures show that with more than 8,000,000 passenger cars in use, the re- placement demand alone should be about 1,000,000 cars. The production of passenger cars last year was 1,883,000. To show how close are the new prices, one of the largest manufacturers in his last cut was only able to reduce $25. This manufacturer is producing at the rate of 110,000 vehicles a month. During this readjustment period some cars are being sold at a loss because of the high wages and the «costly materials that were bought last fall. For that reason every effort has been made to produce better cars at lower prices to insure the big productions which make increased values possible.
