Your letter of inquiry, regarding the shield, or banner, which Is on the Then the “unfinished pyramid” and the ".all-seeing America. And so I am prompted to write to you. my real satisfaction, you would pardon the liberty I take in asking you to explain this noble conception to me. Sincerely yours. I have spent some moments of deep satisfaction before the banner on your house, and I am prompted to take the liberty of asking you to give me, if you will, an explana- tion of some of its outstanding features. I suppose an Englishman, away from his home (as I am) always feels a little thrill on seeing his country’s flag; but when I saw my flag side by side with the Stars and Stripes, and with those clasped hands below, I was con- scious of an exultation not easy to describe. I know the story of Joseph’s sons and the ideal of their ultimate unity; I would greatly appreciate your the reverse of the Seal of this banner has been on your When 1 recall the troublous If you knew F. One Law, Divine Democracy, Universal Brotherhood.” Your request affords me an opportunity to give an interpretation of these words, which are painted upon the banner in glowing letters, that “he who runs may read.” Therefors I am constrained to publish in the® . - = _ press, your letter and my reply. I Lelieve I am moved to do this in obe- dience to the law of spiritual unfold- ment and my resporsibllity to Goa for oroclaiming His law, according to the teachings of Christ Jesus and Uary Baker Eddy. Christ said, at his first appearing: 1 have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot hear them nov Howbelt when he, the Spirit of is come, he will guide you fato ell truth . . . and he will <l.cw you things to come. (John xvi, 12, 13.) Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and author of its texthook, Science and Ilcalth with Key to the Scriptures, searched the pages of the Holy Bible £nd learned the secret of Christ Jesus' metiiod of demonstrating the domin- fon with which God equlpped man, whom He made in His own “image” and “likeness.” (Genesis, 1, 26.) In &cience and Health, she says: The thunder of Sinal and the Ser- mon on the Mount are pursuing and will overtake the sges, rebuking in their course all emor gnd proclaim- the kingdom of heaven on earth. You note the protection of this shleld. As you ses, It Is placed be- tween the windows of the first story: and the house, being so near the side- walk, it would seem an easy task for the lawless to treat it as they did the Fnglish flag on the Union Club of Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. I was {rresistibly moved by spiritual impulsion, when I conceived this shield, and as it unfolded its signifi- cance to me, I was convinced that it was a divine concept, which must be New York, last winter. The banner has been attacked, and I have twice had it removed for repairs, which were £o slight, that a little patching of the English flag was all that was neces- &ry. I have always regarded this protection as a verification of God's assurance to those who put thelr trust in Him and strive to dwell “in the se- cret place of the most High,” and who belleve His promise, as found in the Ninety-first Psalm, which reads: He shall cover thes with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Mrs. Eddy atates, in Science and Health With Key to the Scripturcs: The time for thinkers has come. ‘Truth, Independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. . . . Though empires fall, “the Lord shall reign forever.” (p, viL) As this conception developed, I called upon Omnipotent Omnipresence, God and His Christ, to protect me from the lawless and the opposers of the flag of Great Britain, our mother country, and placed the shield on the (acade of my house, under the ehadow of the Almighty. I have prayed that its silent language would enligihten all who are ready to advance from Carkness to light,—from a material, to a spiritual interpretation of God, man, and the universe. In fulfilment of the law of God, the unity of Great Britain and America must de effected. As the people pass, pause and gaze upon the words of the shleld, their expressions have revealed to me the good and evil elements which the human face mirrors. Some read every word, from the top to the last line on the shield and seem to desire to grasp its import. Others glance quickly at the flags and noting that England and America are clasping hands, as brothers Ephraim and Manasseh, the two sons of Joseph, they show their approval or disapproval, by a smile, The light of the body is the eye thy whole body (politic) “IamtheLord your GOD which have / JONATHAN MANASSEH OTHERS AND- if therefore thine eye besingle shall befull of light. (Compled rom an official brochurd, entitled “The History of the Seal of the United States,” published by the Department of State, at Washington, In 1909.) The original act, creating the Seal of the United States, was passed in 1782, and authorized both the obverse and the reverse, but the die for the reverse of our Seal has never been cut, and the design is rarely shown in dictlonaries, or other reference works. The wording of the act, regarding the reverse, is as follows: REVERSE—A pyramid unfinished. In the zenith, an eye in a triangle, surrounded with a glory proper. Over the eve these words, “Annult Caeptis.” On :he base of the pyramid the numerical letters MDCCLXXVI. And underneath the foilowing motto, “Novus Ordo Seclorum.” —JOURNALS OF CONGRESS, vol. 4 [ed. 1823), p. 3. In 1841 an act was passed to bring forth the reverse of the Seal, and in 1884 the sum of $1,000 was appropriated, part of which was to be devoted to this purpose (23 Stat., 394), but those to whom the work was entrusted failed to carry out the provisions of the law, and seem not to have had the slightest glimmer of understanding as to its mean- ing, declaring that “it can hardly look otherwise than as a dull emblem of a masonic fraternity,” and suggesting that “If it can be Kept in the dark as long as it seems to have been kept, why not keep it s0?" But 1 affirm that God, who is Light, and in whom is no darkness at all, is re- vealing the reverse of the Beal of the United States. The aggressive resistance to the reverse of our Seal is described in the official brochure, which states: Its fate has been singular. It was prescribed as part of the seal by the act of 1782, but went unnoticed. The act of September 15, 1789, continued the seal as prescrihed in 1782, but no effort was then made to design or cut the reverse. When the seal of 1841 was made it was still ignored. and In 1883 it was definitely determined, after designs had been drawn, to abandon it. The act of July 7, 1884, made appropriation “to obtain dies of the obverse and reveree” of the seal, the act following the State Department's request, and it had un- doubtedly been the intention of the Department, when the appropri- atlon was asked for, to cut the reverse; but its purpose was changed atter fuller consideration, and it felt at liberty to leave this part of the new law unexecuted. . . . It may be added that when the exhibit of the State Department Wwas prephred for the Chicago Expo- sition In 1892, large emblazonments of the obverse and reverse of the seal were painted, but . . . the reverse . . . was never b The meaning of the symbols and mottoes on the reverse of our Seal Is given in the explanation of the shield, which follows. EXPLANATION OF THE SHIELD. The first inscription reads: “The light of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body [politic] shall be full of light.” —CHRIST JESUS. The single eye signifies a steadfast purpose to reflect only God, good. Life, Truth and Love; and this course brings to the individual, or nation, light, or divine illumination, wisdom, and intelligence from on High; where- as the dual eye, or mortal vision, sees and knows good and evll, life and death, truth and error, love and fear, and loses its grasp upon God as All and omnipotent. v The second quotation Is: “I am the Lord your Gop which have separated you from other people.” —LEVITICUS, xx., 24. In the Biblical allegory of the twelve sons of Jacob, typifying the twelve tribes of Israel, Joseph, representing the Anglo-Saxon race, was “geparate from his brethren,” in obedlence to God's decree. As the first- born child of Joseph, or branch of the Anglo-Saxon race, Manasseh, or America, is first to fulfil this divine destiny, in being ‘“separate’ from other people, as embodied in the national motto, “E Pluribus Unum"— out of many, one. ’ The Reverse of the Seal of the United States bears at the top the motto, “Annult Ceeptis,” which means “‘God has prospered our endeav- ors.” The eye in the teangle is an ancient symbol for God, and was in- tended as aich by the designers of our Seal, who referred to it as “The Overseeing God" and “The Eye of Providence,” watching over our coun- try. It also forms the capstone or head of the pyramid, which is the traditional symbol for the spiritual man, made in the image ard likeness of God—i. e., Christ and them that are Christ’s. Before the original de- sign for the reverse of the Seal was adopted in 1782, the lines of the pyramid In the sketch were corrected by Charles Thomson, then Secre- tary of State, to correspond with those of the Great Pyramid of Gizeh, in Egypt. When the four sides of the pyramid are conceived of as pro- longed indefinitely, the symbol is used to represent the infinity of the spiritual universe, as created by God. As man is created in the “Image” and “likeness” of God (Genesis, 1., 26), so the headstone of the pyramid is a perfect model for the entire structure, and being the capstone, or “head of the corner,” it is perforce “rejected” until the rest of the struc- ture is prepared to receive it. (Matthew, xxi., 42.) The thirteen courses of stone typify the thirteen original States. The motto “Novus Ordo Seclorum!’ explained on the shield and indicates that the founders of our nation, with divine illumination, discérned that the birth.of America dated a new era in the progress of rhan's redemption of his birthright as a child of God. The Seven Pointed Star is a Biblical symbol for Christ, who said: “] am the root and offspring of David, and the bright end morning star.” —REVELATION, xxil., 16. The Eagle, chosen as our national symbol, is a type of immortality. as it Is reputed never to dle of old a It represents courage, power of vision, and lofty aspirations, as it seeks the highest spaces for its flight and the tqpmost crags for its nest. In Cruden's Bible Concordance it is recorded that “Between the/ eagle and the dragon there is constant enmity, the eagle seeking to kill it, and the dragon breaking all the eagles' eggs It can find.” The eagle is used throughout the Bible as a type of God's power. In St. John's vision of the woman in the Apoca- lypse, persecuted by the dragon, who sought to destroy her child, Holy Writ states: “And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wildern into her place, where she is nour- ished for e time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.” —REVELATION, xii,, 1 The wings, overspreading both America and Great Britain, indicate that the divine power is protecting both Manasseh and his brother Ephraim. o The Clasped Hands symbolize the God-ordained unity of the Anglo- Saxon race, a member of which race—Leif Ericson—discovered America in the year 1000, and the two branches of which are destined to come together as brothers Jonathan and John, or Manasseh and Ephraim, as foretold in the Bibiical history of Joseph, related In the Pccompanylng letter. = The quotations below the Clasped Hands are from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Sclence, who perceived the divinely ordained unity of Anglo-America and expressed it in her poem, ““The United States to Great Britain,” which is given in full on pages 837-338 of her book, entitled “Miscellany.” She saw that our Constitution was a heaven“inspired charter of man's liberty and con- formed with the laws of God; and in the Monroe Doctrine she discerned America's obedience to the injunction to be “separate” and to prevent any interference or adulteration from European nations. ONE GOD, ONE LAW, DIVINE DEMOCRACY, UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD—these words set forth the spiritual law of God, which “will eventually rule all nations and peoples—imperatively, absolutely, finally—with divine Science”—MARY BAKER EDDY. (Science and Health, p. 565.) The archers have sorely grieved in the flery furnace, is protecting this « . And . . . to thee . . . ,néd to thy seed after thee will I give ‘,le land.” (Genesis xxxv., 11, 12.) Jacob had twelve sons (typical of the twelve tribes of Israel) and of them all, he especially loved Joseph, because of Jo- seph’s mnoble characteristics. Their father’s preference for Joseph excited the envy of his brethren, who put him in a pit to perish, then, changing their minds, sold him into captivity, to the Ishmaelites. After dipping his “coat of many colors” in the blood of a kid. the brethren showed it to their father, or a frown, or an expression of hatred, which reveals the satanic characters, who would, if it wers not tmpossible, destroy both nsiiens and set up a kingdom of Ywlessness and destruc. tion. Every Bible student knows the his- tory of Joseph. His father, Jacob, had been blessed of God, and re-named Israel; “and God said untohim, . . . Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee Jacob, as proof that Joseph had been slain by wild beasts. The Ishmaelites proceeded, with their caravan, to Egypt, where they sold Joseph to a csptain in the army of Pharach. Rec- ognizing Joseph's superior character, Pharaoh gave him command over all the land. Later, by his wife Asenath, Joseph had two children, Manasseh and Ephraim, Manasseh being the first-born. After many years, Joseph brought his SN e R TN G 0 5 O R T i T 4 M e 4 AT s RS S B~ 00 P 0 ARV G S LY father, Jacob, and his brethren to him in Egypt, and protected tham rrom tne famine which he, Joseph, had prophe- sied; and when he brought Manasseh and Ephraim, his two children, to Jacob to be blessed, Jacob adopted them as his own and prophesied that they should be great nations. Thus thse favored tribe of Joseph was divided into two branches, typified by Manas- seh and Ephraim (America and Great Britain); and even as Joseph had been separated from his brethren, so way the Aagig#fiaxon nation “separate” and distinct fvamn the other nations. Man- asseh, being the first-born branch, is the first to demonstrate its God- ordained separateness. At the time of Jacob's passing on, he called together his twelve sons, and described the destiny of each. Jossph had the richest blessing of all, for Jacob declared: ' Joseph {s & fruitful bough, even & ‘whose g him, and shot at him, and hated him: But his bow abode in strength. and the arms of his hands we made etrong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:) [Christ] Even by the God of thy fathe who shall help thee; and by the Al mighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above . . they shall be on the d of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren. (Genesis xlix, 22-26.) This blessing is the inheritance of Manasseh and Ephraim, as the sons of Joseph; and their names are inscribed upon the banner, or shield, to which you allude, as the Biblical terms for the Anglo-Baxon brethren, America and Great Britain. For nearly three years, I have watched the processions which passed this shield and I am convinced that the same power which protected Danie! in the lions’ den and covered, with the panoply of love, the Hebrew children “handwriting on the wall” from tha flames of hatred of such as defy the law of God and would deliver our coun- try into the hands of the enemy of righteousness; but the envy and hatred of Joseph's brethren Is abating, through the suffering, pestilence, and famine with"which thege destructive elements annfhilate themselves. T have learned a great lesson as th» result of my obedience to God's guid- ance, in putting forth this shield, viz., that the hour has arrived wnen the people are awaking to the fact, that a subtle Influence has been exertsd upon genuine Americans in our nation, to prevent them from considering the greatness of the reverse of the Scal of the Unitod Btates of America, with the All-Seeing Eye, typifying God; the pyramid, in symbol of the spiritual man, of God's creating,—Christ and them that are Christ's,—and the motto declaring a new era, which promises crowns the obellsk which forms the epire of my church, First Church of Christ, Sclentist, New York City, whici I, with my students, erected, and {n 1903 dedicated as a tribute of love ana grat- itude to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. It has been my privilege to conve:se with many of the most intelligent busi- ness and literary men in New Yeork City, on the question of the reverre of our Seal, and I have not fonyd one who had given it any thought, and very few seemed to consider tne cut- ting of the reverse of the Seal to be important, at the present moment. + 1 belleve—and T am entitled to my conviction—that this Is the psycho- logical moment, when Americans must awake to the demands of God and de- fend our country frem the mental, soporific influence of the evil mind, which opposes God and His Christ, and would lull both America and Great Britain into apathy. This would pre- vent them, as brethren and sons of Joseph, from clasping hands in unity and brotherly love, over continent and ocean. With the uhited wisdom, strength, and power of divine love, with which the God of Love fortifies all who vbey His law, the representa- tives of these two nations, who are chosen by the people, should. rise to their countries’ needs, and peace and the power of spiritual “dominion,” would be the pordon of all nations. This will finally be demanded. For years, human autocracy has In- sidiously paraded in America as de- mocracy, until the righteous cry out for the God of the universe to save our country and enable Americans, by example, to teach the nations the way to universal brotherhood, which will restore universal peace and prosperity. The father of our country, George Washington, lives! The great eman- cipator, Abrabam Lincaln. lives! Tne voices of these God-inspired men have rung down the years, and to-day, Washington is calling, in ciarion tones: Let us raise a standard. to which the wise and honest can repair; the event is In the hapds of God. (Conatitution Address.) And Abraham ceased to proclaim: Thia nation. under God, shall bave a new birth of freedom. . gov- ernment of the people. by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. (Gettysburg Addreas.) The hour has arrived for emancipa- tion from mental slavery, or the tyranny of the =o-called carnal mind, with its destructive qualities of greed, avarice, lust, fear, envy, personal ag- grandizement, or pride of place and power, hatred, and revenge. The time is at hand for the dellverance of America from ignorance of the cause of the present chaos and insecurity, which threatens to paralyze'our coun- try. God is declaring, through His Christ: I will overturn, overturn, over- turn, it: and ft shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and 1 will give it him. (Ezekiel, xx1., 27.) The motto of the United States of America is composed of these words: “In God We Trust.” In what do Americans put their trust? Let each realize his responsibility for his loyalty to God, to his country, to the Consti- tution, and to the courage of his own convictions. “God give us ment A time like this demands Strong minds, great hearts, faith and ready hands; Men ;A'lho possess opinions and a will; men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog: For while the rabble, thumb worn creeds, ‘Their large profestions and their little deeds, Mingle In selfish strife—lo! dom weeps, Wrong rules the land and walting Justice sleeps!™ (J. G. Holland.) Is not this the God-appointed hour for true Americans to demand that the reverse of our Seal be cut, under- stood and obeyed? “One with God is a majority.” Men who trust in God compose a majority, for God's law finally compels obedience. Those whom the people have entrusted with the weal of our nation, are called to awake to their responsibility as Americans, or abandon their claim to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” and al- low themselves to be classified as op- ponents of the laws of our nation. A national anthem, the words of which are by Alice Morgan Harrison, is most expressive of the sentiments of this nation: America, America, thou gavest birth Tq_light that lighteth all the earth. God keep it pure! ‘We love that onward leading light; We will defend it with our might; It shall endure! Lincoln has not true with their Free- At the present moment, America is passing through a condition of chaos and horror, fear, doubt, and uncer- tainty, according to the press reports. Is this the mental condition of men who put their trust in God, obey His law, follow the teachings of Christ Jesus, and subscribe to our nation's Seal? America, America, our love of thee Is freemen's love of liberty, The Spirit-blest, Which- holds high happiness in store, When Right shall reign from shore to shore, From East to West. Genuine Americans are no longer in the valley of indecision. They have caught the inspiration of the oncoming Christ, and are standing on the moun¢ of spiritual vision. They clearly dis- cern the heights of brotherly love and prosperity to which America and Great Britain will ascend, when they umte in fulfilling this law of God: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Thou shalt love thy aeighbor as thyself. (Matthew xxil, 37, 39.) In -consummation of Biblical proph- ecy, Manasseh and Ephraim are de: tined to yield obedience to the demands of God. Yielding, they will break the mental fetters, which have bound them to a merclleas despot, the so-called carnal mind, an element which has no right to our inheritance, and which rich inheritance they only can claim, Ppeace and prosperity for Anglo-Amer- | who obey the laws of God.
