The level of prices was re- stored early in the dealings here, and the market displayed varying strength until the closing, which was firm and iabout at the best prices. The move- ! ments were not wide, and transactions were not large, but it was evident that the speculative party which has embark- ed in the market this week saw nothing {in the day's development change their position, which is to await a re- { vived public demand for securities, which is expected to follow the hoped- for relaxation in the money rates next weck. Conditions in the:coal industry had | special reflection in the day's move- | ment, especially the decision of the miners to accept the terms offered by that portion of the soft coal operators which concedes the miners' demands, insteaq of making a shutdown of pro- { duction general. This is supposed to I be a direct benefit to the United States Steei Corporation, whose supply of fuel is concerned, and the United « States Steel stocks were notably strong in consequence. The Pittsburg coal stocks moved up briskly after lving dormant | for a long time. Rumors were busily circulated at the ~ Have made the owners millionaires. The best | prices were made after the appearance of the bank statement, which was bet- i ter than ‘had been expected. A further consignment of $1,250,000 of imported gold due to arrive today will appear in next week's bank reserves. There was continued discussion of further probable engagements of gold for im- port. Rates for sterling exchange, however, were marked up sharply to- ¢ay, although the Saturday market is | only nominal. Total sales | $1,000,000. There has been some additional par- kl:clps!lon in the stock market this : week, which is commonly attributed to an almost exclusively professional ori- i gin. W. Tompkins, local managing direct k € graph Company, recei‘z‘ed the fo]lowillggre]iti\’e to the claim of the Marconi svstfim of monopoly Recent advices from New York in which it is stated that the Marconi Wireless 'I_‘ilegr_aph ' system had virtually been given the monopoly of the wireless televg@ph system are mis eading. The facts in the case are that the recent suit is an appeal from the Lmtgd _Statcs Circuit Lourt on a suit brought by the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company for infringement coverng six counts. The decision of the Supreme Court gave the Marconi company counts three and five, and the De Forest Company counts one, two, four and six. The decision was a sweeping one in our favor, on the broad claims of the Marconi of reissue patent. We are not using, and have ‘never used any apparatus covered by Marconi claims three and five. These latter claims e_mbraLe an- tiquated receivers with metal filings, which have long since been dxscarded_. There is no :1_13:5- tion involved respecting the modern apparatus now being used by the American de Forest Wire- less system, and there should be none in the future, as it is distifctly different in principle and superior in practical operation. The main issue was upon the claims F’f, prior rights and brogd basic patents heretofore claimed by the Marconi company. " The decision i these respects is absolutely and clearly in our favor, and should dispose ‘of, for all time to come, the unwar- ranted representations made by the Marconi people. The practical accomphshments'of the American de Forest Wireless Telegraph Company in operating successfully at great d1stanoe.s over land as well as water speak for themselves, and legal protectiog‘lAnov_«' nfl‘ered.us by this recent decision of the United States Supreme Court renders our position in the wireless field impregnable. - Tt justifies the faith and confidence of the public. Doctor de Forest has show_’n comple_te_ in- dependence through the evolution of a receiver and other forms of apparatus which are distinct from any employing principles of the particular forms of apparatus covered by the "Marconi patents. The business of the American de Forest company is prospering and increasing daily, and the recent United States Government work, as announced by the Navy Department, agaln demonstrates the superiority of the American de Forest system. The statement that the United States Government will be left without a wireless system unless it adopts the Marconi is en- tirely false. y The statement is entirely without foundation, as clearly proven by the following telegram sent by Mr. Abraham White, president of the American de Forest Wireless Telegraph Company: WASHINGTON, D.
