Nature’s Children Gladiolus By LILLIAN COX ATHEY. It has been said that a novice should plant gladioluses because these flowers are so easily grown. ‘The beginner will not have the dis- couragement so often experienced when starting a garden, by losing the first plants. However it may be, it is a proven fact that gladioluses are versatile plants, adapting them- selves to all kinds of soil and con- ditions. They have left behind them the days when they were grown only in rows to fill space and for cutting. Today they are socialites of the first magnitude. For they may be had in the most glarious colors, and a few have REAL ESTATE LOANS FIRST TRUSTS to finance or refinance homes in the District or nearby Maryland and Virginia. You may grow them in the company of perennials, or you may plant them in masses for a special occasion. Today the blossoming of your flowers can be figured on accurately, and unless something very unexpected comes up, like a very late frost, your flower parade will come off on time. If you are beginning in the thrill- | ing adventure of partnership with the plant world and wish to have an | array of gladioluses, you may con- | sult the American Gladiolus Society. At that time colorful displays were exhibited | OIL throughout the world, the first ones appearing in New Zealand and Australia in January of that year.|©! Originally the “glads” came from Africa. They have traveled far since those days, and even now though we may think these flowers have reached perfection, it is possi- ble for them to advance still more through the efforts of those who understand them. It is fortunate for all those who | Md. wish to grow these lovely flowers that the finest kind may be propa- gated by separating the corms and cormels. The corms are short, thick, underground stems. They dmer from bulbs, such as our lilies possess—and our onions, which are known as true buds with fleshy scales. Every individual corm con- tains one or more buds from which new corms develop. You may have several corms growing from the parent corm in one season. Cormels are small corms which grow be- tween the old corm and the new ones. Several cormels are usually left behind when the corms are dug and cormels planted in the early spring will grow to very good-sized corms their first year, producing flowers the second year. You may plant your corms after the frost is out of the ground and as late as the middle of June. If you plant your corms two weeks apart, you will have a succession of blooms. The larger corms will produce finer flowers and at an earlier date, but they must be planted in deeper pockets and in light, sandy soil, the smaller ones in shallow pockets in heavy loam.
