If you haven't looked at eooling devices for quite some time ‘Leaning Tower’ Falls Big Improvements In Air-Conditioning Machines Reported Personally Con- structed by Owner *10,950 A Real Value in a Lovely Natural Setting. you will be surprised to find how compact and efficient-looking the units of today are compared with the bulky, unwieldy machines which were brought out four or five years ago. You may remember that those original units, which were as “port- able” as a grand piano, required elaborate plumbing and electrical installation work and still had only enough capacity to cool a rather small room. Nowadays it's a different story. A large number of well-designed air conditioners are now on the market which not only fulfil a large majority of the requirements for “true air conditioning,” such as cooling, dehumidification, filtering and air circulation, but do so out of a box which is a fraction of the size of their gigantic predecessors. With really hot weather hard upon us, your home will welcome one or more of a new line of air condi- tioners recently brought out which are designed to do specialized jobs. If you want to cool only your bed- room at nighttime, you can install a small conditioner with a minimum capacity to do the job, and at a lower cost, naturally. If you want to cool an average-sized room during the daytime, such as a living room or office, you can get a larger unit of similar design and construction but of added capacity. Larger rooms in your home or office also can be adequately cooled with a still larger machine of somewhat dif- ferent design. The first two of these new units | are made in the popular self-con- tained style for mounting in a partly opened window. They contain a powerful hermetically sealed cooling unit complete with the necessary fans for the circulation of outside air through the machine for fresh air supply and heat dissipation. Their cabinets are made of attractively designed sheet steel decorated with handsome wood graining or solid colors to match room color schemes, and according to the manufacturer they may be installed in an ordinary window in the brief space of five minutes. Unit number three also is a good- looking piece of comfort equipment and is similar to the others except that it is a floor model to be placed in front of a partly opened window and connected to the outside air by means of a small connecting duct. All of these units require no plumb- | ing connections of any kind since | they are air-cooled and the con- | densed moisture is blown out of the | window in a fine mist. Nor do they require any special wiring because they may be plugged into an ordi- DiinG Room 11o'x 10°6" Livine Room 18-4" x12%° FOR THE SMALL FAMILY—The house planned this week for The Star by the Washington Metropolitan Section of the Mary- land Society of Architects is one in which the outward forms are based on early American precedent, but with a plan based on the needs of a contemporary small family. Because of its extreme flexibility it can be worked around into all sorts of shapes and designs for your | flower garden beds or along the edges of the most circuitous drives. Known as an interlocking drive- in fence, this new steel product is | certainly of clever design and should be very easy to put in place. The fence units consist of double-arched sections about 4 inches wide, which have interlocking joints on both | outside edges. They are available | in lengths, or depths, of 4 or 6 inches | for borders, and 12, 24 and 36 inches for deep fencing. On special order | they may also be had in lengths | of 5 feet for use in protecting a flower bed from hedge roots and acting as a wind break. | To install your fence, all you| have to, do is drive one unit after another into the ground with an| ordinary hammer, inserting one in- terlocking edge into the next as you go along. This forms an endless | pattern which will remain strong and firm regardless of the type of ground you are inclosing. It can be obtained in a number of dif- ferent materials, depending on how much you want to invest in per~ manence. A hard cold rolled zinc fence has a bright silver finish, which is especially good for mark- ing out roads and will never rust, or you can get it in & hot galvan- 1zed copper bearing steel, which is| rust-resisting and will cut through | small roots with the greatest of ease. For the last word in this type of fencing you can also get it in everlasting stainless steel.
