Permit Is Issued For Warehouse For D. G. 5. Stores Three-Story, Fireproof Building to Serve As Concern’s Headquarters Building permits have heen issued for the immediate construction of a modern three-story fireproof ware- ouse building here for the District rocery Stores, Inc., it was an- hounced today. The new building, which will be of brick and ceinforced concrete, is to be erected on the south side of C street SW., between Fourth and Sixth streets. It will be built by the Jeffress-Dyer Co., from plans firawn by Architect E. Burton Corning. Designed to serve as headquarters for the executive and general head- quarters of the grocery firm, as well as a warehouse for groceries, meats, rroduce eggs, butter, cheese, etc., he building will be 430 feet long and 105 feet high. Two spur tracks, accommodating 14 cars, will run from the Pennsylvania Railroad’s main line to the second-story level of the structure. Specifications call for installation of the most modern warehouse equipment. The first floor will house the meat, produce, grocery, candy and tobacco sales departments and the cashier’s office. The east eng of the first floor will receive all in- coming local freight. The second floor will house the executive and general offices, in- cluding the purchasing and adver- tising departments. Specially re- frigerated rooms will be located on this floor. The top floor will be used entirely for storage of groceries. Steel Welding Research Committee Is Formed The Engineering Foundation, re- search organization of the national engineering societies, today an- nounced formation of a Structural Steel Welding Research Committee to study problems of design, and fabrication in the building field. The committee is headed by Leon S. Moisseiff, New York consulting engineer, and its membership in- cludes Comdr. C. A. Traxel, design manager of the Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department. ‘The group's program includes establishment of research fellow- ships in American universities. The first fellowship goes to Lehigh Uni- versity for a two-year period and carries with it an annual stipend of $1,100. Other fellowships will be established later. Novel Use of Stencil An unusual but interesting man- ner of treating woodwork is to ap- ply a stencil design i§ combination with staining. The stencil design is applied to the wood with varnish, clear lacquer or shellac. Next the stain is applied and the surplus stain removed. If the wood is to be fin- ished in natural color the stencil is done in japan or color varnish be- fore the surface is filled or var- nished.
