Nature’s Children Red-Bellied Woodpecker (Centurus carolinus) By LILLIAN COX ATHEY, Bird lovers can figure on identify- ing several woodpeckers no matter where they live, except in the Aus- tralian region and Madagascar, two places out of all the forestéd world unoccupied by our famous drumming corps in birddom. There are said to be 700 species of woodpeckers known, one-half of | Their which is to be found in the West- ern Hemisphere, and of this num- ber 22 species are in North America. Individually, woodpeckers .vary enough to make them very inter- esting—actually they all cling very close to family traditions. There- fore, in knowing the outstanding characteristics of the woodpeckers you can understand them better and know fairly well what they are doing as you observe them. ‘Woodpeckers are especlally equipped for their profession— in- sect and grub sleuthing for the pests hidden under the bark of tree trunk or limb. The unusual structure of the foot, except in cne genus, two toes point- ing north, two south, enables them to cling and travel over upright surfaces. The claws are tough and strong and hold fast to positions taken, The pointed, stiffened fail feathers make admirable props. Then the very strong, chisel-like bill is used to chip away at the wood and lay bare the hiding place of the grub, or if the canny fellow resides in a deep tunnel in the tree trunk the very long, extensile tongue, with its horny, spearlike tip, reachess down and harpoons the fat recluse, drawing him forth. ‘Woodpeckers are tireless police- men of our trees, They are at their work at dawn, leaving off their arduous labors at nightfall. It is impossible to compute the amount of money they save us, for they reach the grubs that man or other birds cannot. : These co-workers of ours have Thetrdrurming i ‘ppiemented supplement by a whicker eall, quite like that THURSDAY, MAY 9, 1940. of the flicker, and notes that sound. like “a-k-r-r-ring” A hoarse “chuhchuh” when ascending a tree would make one think that the funny, jerky movement in making this trip was using & powerful lot of energy of the red-bellied wood- pecker. The, red-bellied woodpecker is a well-Known resideut of our Southe ern States. It prefers the decid- uous trees though uses the conif- erous ones also. The nest is either in dead or living trees and placed some 20 feet from the ground. There are four to six typically white woodpecker eggs.
