THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY, MAY 9, 1940. ONLY LEFT SEARS MAY ECONOMY FESTIVAL TODAY ¢ FRIDAY ¢ SATURD SEARS OPEN TONIGHT FRIDA AND SATURDAY NIGHTS TO 9:30 Private Trucks Put Under 1. C. C. Safety And Drivers’ Rules Order Effective August 1 Covers D. C. Vehicles Going Into Nearby States Privately owned commercial trucks operating in interstate com- merce will come under the safety and drivers’ hours-of-service regu- lations promulgated by the Inter- state Commerce Commission on Au- gust 1, the commission announced late yesterday. ‘The order covers vehicles trading out of the District into Maryland and Virginia for wholesale and re- tail businesses. The regulations generally require that the drivers be 21 years of age and physically fit. Their maximum time “on duty” in a week is 60 hours, with a limit of 10 hours actual driv- ing time in any day. They also must keep a “log” of their service. The safety requirements covering equipment do not apply to trucks operating only in the so-called “Metropolitan Area,” in adjacent Maryland and Virginia, but the hours of service do. The reason for this difference, it is explained, 1§ that local standards of safety operas tion are deemed sufficient for such, operation. Farm Drivers Exempt. Drivers of farm trucks and sales- men-drivers are exempted from the 60-hour rule. Instead, the commis- sion prescribed a weekly maximum of 50 hours’ actual driving time. Farm trucks also may be driven by youths of 18, and a “log” will not be required of them, nor must these drivers pass physical tests. Officials said that the drivers of private trucks covered by the regu- lations will remain subject to the 30-cent-an-hour minimum wage prescribed by the Wage-Hour Act, but will not be subject to the rule requiring that working hours in ex- cess of 42 a week be compensated A STOVE SALE WASHINGTON WILL LONG REMEMBER! e lufllflfllllllfllllflllllllflflflm . The commission order brought & dissent from Commissioner All- dredge. “It seems to me that there is no constructive purpose to be accom- plished by displacing the jurisdie- tion of other agencies over this subject matter, which will be a nec- essary legal effect of our entering the field, unless we are in a posi- tion to improve the situation,” he said, adding, “I do not believe we are in such a position at the pres- ent time.” Friends School Mugazfne ' Gets Two High Ratings The Quarterly, general lterary magazine of Sidwell Friends School, has received two high ratings from the National Scholastic Press Asso- clation and the Columbia Scholastic | Press Association. | In the National Association the publication was in the highest class of “All America—Superior”, and in the Columbia Association the rating was “first class.” This is the first time the magazine has received both honors in the same year, it was announced.
