"Blitzkrieg’ Tactics Put fo Test by Army In Louisiana "War’ Streamlined 9th Corps Crosses the Sabine For 16-Day Battle By the Associated Press. JASPER, Tex., May 9.—Long col- |. umns of troops, trained in the Army’s new “Hit 'Em Hard and Dodge” School, smashed into Louisi- ana today to open the $1,000,000-a- day mock war which is giving the American soldier his first peace- time test on a grand scale. “Move rapidly on Alexandria (La.)” was the word that sped to the 25,000 exponents of streamlined warfare—the 9th Corps or Red Army. Move rapidly they did—across the’ Sabine River which furnished the theoretical starting point for the 16-day battle. Defending Force Larger. Over pontoon bridges and regular | highway structures they crossed the stream, and then darted as far into the interior as possible. The famed 2d Division, a stout combat team, cavalry, field artillery and other units rumbled into the enemy country. There it was to harry the numerically superior Blue forces, theoretically a slower-mov- ing group, with swift thrusts and subsequent disappearing acts. The specific order from Lt. Gen. Stanley D. Embick, 3d Army com- mander in charge of the entire man- euvers, directed the Red Army to cross the Sabine at daylight “and move rapidly on Alexandria. Seize the bridges at that place and cover the concentration of the Army. The Army will support with combat aviation on call.” New Tactics Tested. ‘The 45,000 men of the 4th Corps— the Blue Army—were not idle, how- ever. Frontier guards were sta- tioned along all roads leading into Alexandria. Support from the air, too, was promised in efforts to check the swift enemy movements. Crossing of the Sabine meant that a year of planning had at last re- sulted in action. The knowledge gained in laboratory work, in pre- liminary maneuvers designed to show the efficiency of the Army’s new “blitzkrieg” tactics, finally was put to the test. The two corps will be trained in operating over long distances—the front, roughly, stretches 100 miles —against a mobile enemy, and in maneuvering under combat condi- tions with combat aviation and mechanized forces. To Move Residence By the Associated Press. § INDEPENDENCE, Mo., May 9.—A | young orchard stood where his house had to go, so Dave Crick lifted the 160-ton dwelling over the tree tops. Mr. Crick, a lumber dealer, sold his lot, but was determined to put his house on a new site across the block. It couldn’t be taken around because of street obstructions, So the house was raised 5 feet and started on its 500-foot journey over the orchard on cables and heavy timbers, French Lecture In the last of the series of French lectures at.
