DETROIT, May 9.—The Automo- bile Manufacturers’ Association esti- mated today that production of pas- senger cars and trucks in April totaled 447400 units. This was 2 per cent higher than the March out- put and 26 per cent above the volume of April, 1939, the survey said. For the first four months of 1940, A. M. A. placed assemblies at 1,758,- 445 units, or 24 per cent above the comparable period of a year ago. Automotive News estimates April assemblies at 445817 units. In its weekly survey of assembly plant activity it places this week’s produc- tion at 96,960 cars and trucks com- pared with a revised estimate of 100,382 last week and 77,857 this week a year ago. It attributes the shrinkage this week to a curtail- ment to four-day operation in sev- eral plants. New York Cotion By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 9.—Despite de- clines in foreign gnarkets and “free” sterling exchange rates, cotton prices moved into higher ground today. Trading was active, with mill in- terests heavy buyers. Speculative interests turned to the buying side, with light offerings coming from the South and some profit taking. Lack of foreign pressure also encour- eged sentiment. Midafterncon prices were up 8 to 12 points, May (old), 10.65; July (old), 10.31; March, 9.65. Futures closed 6-12 high Old contract: Fe Oven. Hi May % Sin 10. uly 0! New contract: a; 1 5 Low.
