Allied-Soviet Axis To Guard Yugoslavs Seen in Belgrade Military Mission to Go To Moscow Soon for Consultations By the Associated Press. BELGRADE, May 9.—Parallel re- ports of steps toward both Soviet Russia and allied protection of Yugoslavia were viewed today in Balkan diplomatic quarters as evi- dence of possible Russian-British- French co-operation against the Rome-Berlin axis in this corner of Europe, There is this important distinc- tion in the two reported moves af- fecting Yugoslavia: The Yugoslavs appear to be turning toward Russia for support while the British and French seek Yugoslavia's acceptance of their proffered guarantee of her independence and territorial integ- rity. ‘Whether Yugoslavia is looking for help from Russia as well as from the western powers was not clear It is possible that her greater incli- nation is toward the east. At any rate, the possibility of Russia’s entrance into the Balkan picture with a military link to Yugoslavia, at a time when the aliles and the axis powers are ac- cusing each other of preparing to invade little countries, might stave off war in the Balkans. But for how long, or with what other long- Tange results, no one could calcu- late. Military Mission to Leave. It was learned authoritatively in NEW FORT MYER CHAPLAIN —The Rev. Herman J. The disclosure of the forthcoming military talks in Moscow comes while a Yugoslav trade delegation is renewing commercial relations with Russia. The Yugoslavs had a three- hour interview with Premier-For- THE EVENING eign Commissar Vyachesiaft Molo- toff there last night. g Only two days ago the Moscow economic talks were reported to be from commerce to “politi- cal” questions. Vice Premier Viadi- mir Machek said on April 24 tha! resumption of trade relations prob- ably would be followed by diplo- matic relations. Now it appears that diplomatic relations will be followed by military talks and possibly an alliance. Reversal of Policy. All this—the commercial, dip- lomatic and military phases—would represent a reversal of Yugoslavia's anti-Communist policy to which she has adhered since the Bolshevist revolution of 1917, News of the military mission to Moscow had been kept a close secret in Yugoslavia while the nation rushed troops and guns to her Italian and German frontiers. Allied envoys were reported to have assured Yugoslav leaders that British and French troops, planes and naval forces would be sent to the country’s help in'case Yugoslavia found it necessary to resist an axis attack. Italy has disavowed any such in- tention and Germany’s position has been stated as merely a readiness to counter any allied stroke in any quarter, Similar allied offers to Bulgaria and Hungary already had been re- ported, with their success in doubt. Great Britain was sald to have asked Hungary what her reaction would be to pas- sage through her territory of Nazi troops. A roundabout press report that Germany had requested the Hun- garian right of way on a “waen and if” basis was carried yesterday by the official Hungarian news agency. Other countries reported involved in the allied attempt to build a Southeastern European defensive alliance based on commitments of allied aid are Greece, Turkey and Rumania. Reports from Athens said that Premier Gen. John Metaxas showed coolness to an allied proposal that British and French forces occupy Greek islands in the Aegean Sea to put them in position for effective aid.
