Ue 4y VIDA HURST CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE. Gail put down the tray she was carrying crying, “My heavens, Hazel, why didn't you say s0?” “I did,” the other girl reminded her. “After all, there's no hurry about it. I wanted to call Mr. Reid right away but this chap I was with didn't like the idea. He said there might be any number of blond women wearing black veils in the city of Detroit. After I'd calmed down I was glad I didn’t. Because you know how Mr. Reid is. If she hadn't been the one who shot Chris | he'd have made me feel like a fool. So I finally decided I'd just tell you about it: “But it's too late now” Gail said distressed. “She may not be three again.” “They said she was in the habit of coming once a week regular. The same night every week,” Hazel ex- plained. “I got real friendly with one of the professional gamblers, You know the ones who spin the wheel. The girl at the means we'll have to wait until next Thursday.” “Do you intend to check up on it?” | Hazel inquired with her eyes shin- ing. “Do you really think it might bea clue?” “Probably not,” Gail admitted “but at least we ought to see. Il tell Chris and by that time he'll be well enough to go out there. In the meantime, Hazel, please don't say anything about it to anyone else, | will you?” Go Along. “Certainly not,” the other girl | promised. “If my friend calls me | again maybe we could go along. | That is if you think Chris won't mind.” “I'm sure he won't,” Gail said “After all you were kind enough to tell us about her.” When Thursday came however Hazel informed her regretfully that she would be unable to go. She was impatient for the store to close so she could go home to dress. Not because she had much hope of Hazel's tip proving to be a real clue. But because it was the first time Christopher had been allowsd to 80 out. It was such fun to be an en- gaged ‘girl dressing for a date with her darling. And Chris was the kind of person to make the most of it. “Even if it doesn't lead to anything, we'll make it a swell evening,” he promised. “Gee, Gall, think of the excitement we can have using the blond in black as our excuse for visiting all the gambling places.” He was being more reasonable about their delayed marriage per- haps because his father agreed that Gall was right. There was plenty of time and it was better to be en- gaged for awhile John Reid had insisted, If it didn’t last too long an en- gagement could be one of the hap- Plest periods of a couple's life. Reason for Going. Unwilling to worry her mother unnecessarily Gail said nothing to her about their reason for going. So far as Anna knew this was merely a celebration of Christo- pher’s recovery. Anna had been more cheerful since she knew Belle was going to Cali- fornia. She had been helping her sister with her sewing but she ad- mitted to Gail that it would be a relief to get Belle off. “You'd think she was going around the world the preparations she's m;klng:;‘uAnm said. n_spite of her disapproval she watched her dnughurpgreu with admiring eyes. Although it was February it was still cold so Gail wore her wine colored velvet with long clinging sleeves. The orchids Chris sent she pinned upon the collar of her coat. His ring sparkled like blue fire from one slender finger. Look Lovely. “You look lovely,” Anna cried, | “I wish your father could see you.” She did not say so but she realized that Gail's prettiness had flared into beauty since her engagement. The girl's mouth was merry again. Her brown eyes glowed with the radiance that only love can glve. Whatever else Chris might lack | Anna knew that he was a satisfac- tory sweetheart. He had made her daughter feel protected and adored. If only Robert Trenton could be publicly exonerated ¢ from the charges which had caused his death, Yet even if it were Anna told her- self she would never be able to for- give the man who had instigated them. < But now for a few brief hours Gail was thinking of nothing but Chris. They took their time at din- ner as Hazel had told them no one | went to the gambling resort until | late. It was almost midnight as they | drove up a steep hill to the bril- | liantly lighted house which looked }from the outside like a pretentious residence. Hard Eyes. | The manager dressed in evening clothes a shade too faultless was standing in the door of his private | office. His cold hard eyes did not | match the smile with which he | Ds | greeted them. “He knows we haven't been here | before,” Gail whispered. Run on in, darling, while I powder my nose. | | You needn't wait.” | She was so happy that the rea- the - background of her mind. At that instant Gail caught sight of a small woman with a black veil covering her hat hurrying toward the entrance. “She’s seen me,” “Come on, Gail. her.” Chris said. We've got to stop Fleeing Woman. They followed the fleeing woman into the small entrancé hall where the door to the manager’s office was now closed. There was no one else there as Chris laid a hand upon her shoulder. But as he did so she whirled about fumbling in the old- fashioned reticule she carried. “Hands up!” she shouted. The beady eyes beneath the blond ;vlg were glittering and insane with ear. “If you touch me I'll shoot,” she threatened, brandishing a pistol. “Take your hands off me Christo- pher Reid. And you, Gail, stay right where you are . I've shot him once and I'll do it again.” “Aunt Belle!” gasped Gail. (To be continued.) e Atonement Lutheran “Disappointment Overcome of the Rev. Howard E. Frogs on the trees, calling cheer- ily to their friends, convince every nature lover that spring has arrived! Meny claim that this is the most beautiful tree frog in America—a broad statement that should not go unchallenged. The months of glori- ous adventure in the open now lie before us. There are spots to visit that are brimful of adventure. Walking is fast becoming a lost art among many. They are missing rich rewards unless they will forsake the beaten paths and enter the more enchanting ones. In the Southern United States, both east and west of the Missis- sippi, this large tree frog may be seen and even kept successfully in captivity, if you wish to make a study of its habits, or use its in- dustry in behalf of your garden. As you know, tree frogs are small creatures. To say 2! inches is to place this frog first in its class. The skin of the upper parts is smooth and fine in texture; that of the under parts is granulated. The pointed head is flat and broad be- tween the eyes, which are very large, though not greatly elevated. The bronze ears are situated one-half its diameter from the eye. They are round and small. There is a fold of skin over the ear to the shoulder. The body color is a dark brown- ish-green, shading to a bright pea- green or light yellowish-green. There is a band of white or nettalic yellow, which extends from the an- terfor point of the jaw, widening backward along the jaw, passing un- der the ear and continuing as 4 stripe to the thigh or even half the length of the body. The under parts are light and unspotted. This frog has the ability to change from light to dark color, and some mem- bers of the family have a few small, dark, orange spots rimmed with black on their backs. D. C, SATURDAY, In your garden, this small guest loves to roam among the vines and high ferns. It is especially happy in dampish moss gardens and it is the fastest catcher of flies you ever saw, To count the number cap- tured within one hour would be some task. It is a leaper of rare ability, too. A fly four feet away innocently washing its face and off guard, will be harpooned by the frog in one flying jump and flip of the tongue. Another thing you will en- Joy observing is the way the throat- pouch is inflated and the body swells over the lungs and relaxes in me- 17 L G | thodical fashion as the singer sends forth his broadeast on the spring air. small bodies of water where there are broad-leaved aquatic plants.
