REAL ESTATE. *New Home Designed For Enlargement As Income Grows Plan of A. L. Blakeslee Provides Spuce for Future Bedrooms Another home for the family of moderate income, which could easily be enlarged as income becomes greater, is featured this week in the series of house plans made especially for The Star by members of the| ‘Washington metropolitan section of the Maryland Society of Architects. ‘The plan this week was submitted by Arthur L. Blakeslee, Silver Spring, | Vice president of the section. Somewhat formal in plan, it is| reminiscent of the French provincial architecture and has unlimited possi- bilities in interior decoration, and furniture arrangement for a small family. The excellent proportioning | of the design and ihe simplicity of | room arrangement combine to create i an atmosphere of dignity unusual in | small home planning | The motivating thought has been | to provide a sensible, attractive| scheme suitable for a small fami but which will provide in the com modious attic space for future bed- rooms and bath besides generous closet and storage facilities. Interior Vistas Outstanding. Long interior vistas are outstand- ing in connection with this plan and makes it especially adaptable to the charm of pastel color treatment in the various rooms. An unusual, but | sirable and useful feature, is the | antry separating the kitchen from | e dining room. This provides shelf race for china and glassware and 50 prevents odors of cooking in the tchen from penetrating to other portions of the house. The staircase, while convenient to the living room, does not take away space which would be needed for other purposes, and is partly screened by the large fireplace. The front porch is so arranged that by the installation of insect screens in the arches it will become | practically a part of the living room, thereby increasing the ac- | commodations of that part of the | house. and by the use of glazed sash in lieu of the screens in the winter time it may be used as a sun porch or conservatory for plants and flowers. Part Basement Provided. Laundry and heating plants are located in a part basement under the kitchen, but an entire basement & % [ A sl The thcught behind the plan of this house is to provide a sensible, attractive scheme for a family of moderate in- come, which will provide in the large attic space for fu- ture bedrooms and bath as income and family require- ments increase. This house was planned for The Star by Arthur L. Blakeslee, Silver Spring, viee president of the Washington Metropolitan Sec- tion of the Maryland Society of Architects. New Jersey Realtor | Stresses Courfesy | In Making Sales St. Catherines Island To Be Summer Colony Little changed in three centuries, except for the erection of one house and an attempt at farming, St. Catherines Island on the Potomac River is now being developed into a summer colony. Named during the Ark and Dove expedition to Southern Maryland in tract of half wild, partially wooded ground 14 miles this side of Leonard- town, Md., and about 57 miles from | Washington. It is one of the few un- developed, accessible islands on the | Atlantic Coast. Plans for its improvement call for | the sale of about 28 summer home- sites, of which 8 have been sold to professional men in Washington and | New York; a golf course, docks and | | many recreational facilities. Bradley, realtor of Trenton, N. J., discussed “Making More Sales in 1940” at the Washing- ton Real Estate Board’s annual spring meeting, attended by more than 130 realtors, and held Thurs- day night at Wardman Park Hotel. Stressing the importance of courtesy in the equipment of a sales- man, Mr. Bradley stated there are many little courtesies that ieave a lasting memory in the minds of purchasers .as well as those who might have purchased through other sources. Realty “Sound Investment.” Real estate, Mr. Bradley said, each year is being recognized as a sound investment as demonstrated by the large sums being invested by various foundations, insurance and others, which money formerly went into other income producing channels. Mr. Bradley added that people generally are becoming more and | more real estate minded and that in *6,.325 Near Franciscan Monastery Grounds, Holy Name Col- lege, Burroughs Elementary School. 3723 SOUTH DAKOTA AVE.
