REAL ESTATE. ‘First Aid For the Ailing House By ROGER B. WHITMAN., Q. In a two-family frame house I have made an opéning with a trap door leading to the attic. To use the attic I must lay floor boards across the 2x4 beams. Should I put in windows for cross ventilation in the attic? There are none at present. A. Two by fours are very light for attic floor beams, too light to sup- port any weight in addition to the cefling. You should not use the attic for storage for this reason. Openings for cross ventilation will make your house much cooler in summer than it has been. With openings and leaving the trap door open you will get a thorough draft from down- stairs that will carry off much of the heat of a summer day. Leaks in Water Tank. Q. I have a galvanized hot-water boiler in the kitchen. In two or three places it leaks about eight inches from the top. I have been putting putty on, but it does not help. Can you tell me what to put on to stop the leak? A. Replacement is advisable. A tank that is beginning to leak in several spots is evidently badly cor- roded and may cause serious dam- age. A sliver of white pine or maple whittled to a long tapered point fine enough to enter the hole, then driven into the opening, may hold longer than putty. Painted Telephone. Q. How can a couple of layers of paint, lacquer, and aluminum be re- moved from the base of a telephone hand-set? A. Your contract with the tele- phone company forbids any work on the telephone instrument; paint- ing, or anything else. You should ask the company to replace your instrument. Flue Connection. Q. Is there any danger from fire where the flue from a gas water heater is connected into the chim- ney directly over the oil-burner smokestack flue? A. There is no real danger in this | hookup, but it may have a detri- mental effect on draft conditions in the boiler. If the flue from the water heater must be connected to the main chimney it is advisable to keep the two openings into the chimney as far apart as possible. Dusty Hot-Air Heat. Q. I have installed a new hot-air furnace with four vents to rooms for heat. Everything is working well | except for the fact that the air,| being taken from tlie cellar, is laden with dust. This dust comes into the rooms through the registers. ‘We seem to be living in a sort of Western dust storm most of the | time. Is there some way we can filter the dust out of the air before it reaches the living rooms? A. Your best move will be to install | a filter unit, which comes equipped | with a fan to force the air through | the filters. Your local heating con- tractor can give you information. It would also help to make a dust catcher for the registers. This is & simple job, consisting of putting one or two thicknesses of dark mus- lin mosquito netting inside the reg- ister. After washing a new china teapot in soap and moderately hot water, I preheated it before making tea in it, after which I put the pot on an asbestos mat over a very low gas flame, to keep it warm. A large black soot-like stain appeared, marring the pot through from the inside to the outside. What caused | this stain and is there any way I | can remove it? | A. The china clay under the glaze, being absorbent, soaked up some of the tea, which was steeping in the pot. The stain is incurable. Too bad. Worn Stair Finish. Q. Q. I have a leather club chair, which is near a radiator. The leather is beginning to crack and dry. ‘What kind of dressing would be best to preserve the Jeather and restore its flexibility? . A. Leather exposed to high tem- peratures may be completely de- stroyed. You may possibly be able to restore its flexibility by applying a leather dressing. You can get this at a large department store, or at & leather goods store. In addition, tests are being ar- ranged to study the protective power of several recently developed re- sistant coatings. These coated specimens will be exposed both to the air and by submergence in the spray water of the same system that was used for the uncoated metals.
