FINANCIAL. Capifal Sfore Sales 5.9Per Cent Above 1939in Week Four Weeks’ Volumes Off 1.2 Per Cent From Year Ago By EDWARD C. STONE. Department store sales in Wash- ington in the week ended April 13, 1940, were 59 per cent higher than sales in the week ended April 15, 1939, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond reported today. This eon- trasted with a drop in the fifth dis- trict of 4 per cent. Sales in Washington showed a decrease of 21 per cent from the previous week this year against 25 per cent in the whole district. In the four-week period ending April | 13, sales in the Capital was off 12| per cent from last year while !he average slump for the fifth district | was 2 per cent. Baltimore reported a decline of 11 | per cent from the comparative week last year, 29 per cent from the prev- fous 1940 week and 1.8 per cent in the four-week period. In a group of other cities trade was down 13 per cent from the same week last vear, 13 per cent from the previous week and 8.3 per cent in the four weeks, | the report said. | Mergenthaler Stock Higher. | Mergenthaler Linotype stock has‘ turned more active in recent ses- sions on the Washington Stock Ex- | | change. The stock sold Thursday ! at 151, and opened yesterday with | three sales totaling 100 chares at| the same price. New York Cotton BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 20.—Cotton futures advanced moderately in| quiet trading today. Stock Market Stages Active Rally at Week's Close Price Advance Is Led By Steels, Aviations And Specialties By VICTOR EUBANK, Amcx ted Press Pinancial Writer. ORK, April 20.—Steels, aviations and specialties today led the stock market on its first real rally in more than a week. Gains ran to 2 points or so at the best but these were shaded at the close Shipbuilding, paper and woolen is- sues were out in front at the start. The steel group, hesitant for a while, also put on a rising show. Aeronau- tical stocks followed. Motors edged forward, along with some rails, cop- pers and utilities. Volume picked up on the come- back, with transfers for the two hours around 650,000 shares. Wall Street, although still con- fused over European war de- velopments, seemed heartened .by Paris dispatches telling of friendly French-Italian negotiations looking toward a Mediterranean entente. The conclusion was that if these two nations can iron out their differ- ences the allied cause will be greatly aided. Some short covering and specu- iative buying was reported on the theory the market, after failing in seven oonsecutive sessions to make any progress on average, was due for at least a temporary upward reversal. New highs for the year or longer | were registered for New York Ship- building, American - Hawaiian Steamship, International Mercantile | Marine, Electric Boat, Armour, Wil- son, International Paper, Zonite and | American Woolen. Italian bonds were strong and corporate loans improved. Com- modities inclineq to tilt higher. Washington Exchange SALES. Capital Transit Co.—20 at 14%. BONDS PUBLIC UTILITY. A scarcity of contracts developed when early selling by Bombay, spot | houses and the south subsided and | prices recovered small early losses on trade buying and some profes- | sional covering for the week end. ; Futures closed 4-5 higher. ©Old contract— Open.
