Solution to Yesterday’s Puzzle. Nature’s Children BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. Jolt-Head Porgy. (Calamus bajonado.) of them is a delicious food fish. This gives the porgies a flying start. ' The saucer-eye is known in the West Indies, north to the Florida Keys, and several fishermen have caught them in Jamaica, Puerto Rico and "THE ‘porgies of late years have | Cuba. The little-head is fairly common figured in many newspaper re- ports. In fact, several magazimes have had interesting accounts of their cap- ture or near-cdpture. The genus in which the porgies be- long has 13 species, all Americans. They are shore fishes, and every one 4 in the same range. But the jolt-head porgy is the one most fishermen prefer to go after, as it is the largest member of the clan, and is known to reach a length of two feet and tip the scales 8t 10 pounds. Among the Flordis Keys and in the 'y West Indies it is very abundant. ~| Here, on the smooth, clear bottom, you can even sit and watch the female A porgy -clear the space so that she can lay her eggs. In July snd August, 4 thousands and thousands of the jolt- head mothers gather to preform their maternal duties. Tre adults are a dull, brassy color, with small blue markings. In the center of each scale there is a glossy area. There is a blue stripe below the large eye. In the other members this color is deeper. As a food fish this porgy ranks high, although the flesh is rather coarse grained. At any time of the year they can be caught. They are not tempera- mental and will take almost any kind § | e of bait from the hook. They may even be taken in fish-traps. This would indicate the porgy is not very intelli- gent and is too easily caught. The truth is that this fish is rather in- different, and apparently willing to take chances if food is offered. Then having valued its life or free- dom so lightly, it wakes up to the fact and begins to fight. A 10-pound fish with a tough mouth can do a lot of twisting, turning and dashing about before it is too worn out to fight any more. This performance gives the : i fisherman all the fun and exercise he desires, one of the things that always made the jolt-head a favorite game fish, (Copyright. 1937.) Flag Presented King. On the 122d anniversary of th battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Well ington presented to King George A Windsor Castle, the flag due annuall in payment for the family estate Strathfleldsaye, England.
