JULY 29, Seaboard Profits Up 154 Per Cent From 1936 Levels By the Assoclatea Press. NORFOLK, Va., July 29.—The net railway operating income of the Sea- board Air Line Railway gained 154 per cent during the first six months of this year as compared to the same period last year, a company report compiled for the Interstate Commerce Commission showed. For the first half of this year the net railway operating income was $2,- 956,000. It amounted to $1,162,000 for the same period last vear, which was a gain so far this year of $1,794,000. 168 FIRMS SHOW EARNINGS GAIN Total Reaches $345,402,- 313, or 13 Per Cent Above Same 1936 Quarter. By the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, July 29—Second- quarter earnings of the first 168 re- porting companies were 13 per cent above the comparable period a year ago at $345402,313, a compilation by the Associated Press showed today. The rate of gain over the previous year dropped substantially in the latest quarter, the result primarily of drastic declines in profits of General Motors and Chrysler. Rising costs and inability of the big motor makers to operate at ca- pacity because of strike tie-ups were sald in trade circles to have been the underlying cause of the setback Steel producers headed the list of gainers. The first 15 concerns in this group issuing statements for the quarter chalked up a $47.540,183 net income against $20,790,157 in 1936, a 129 per cent advance. Analysts pointed out, however, the tabulation did not include the two biggest independent steel companies that were strikebound for a consid- erable period, Republic Steel and Youngstown Sheet & Tube. Financial quarters expect both to report smaller than average improvement because of production delays. A straw in the wind. they said, was that the only two steel firms showing a decline in the latest quarter com- pared with last vear were Truscon and Inland Steel, both of which ex- perienced strikes in the past three months. Building equipment concerns turned in the second biggest recovery in profits, up 65 per cent. Anhough‘ construction slackened somewhat in the period as building costs mounted, new structures were erected at a substantially faster rate this year than last. Other groups doing better than average were petroleum products, up 62 per cent; machinery manufactur- ers, up 57 per cent: railroads, 33 per cent; automobile accessories, 17; chem- icals, 15, and utilities, 14. The following tabulation shows the number of reporting companies, sec- ond quarter dollar income, and the percentage gain over the same period last year: 1937 Per cent Industrs. teel Building equipment”_ oil Machinery Miscellaneous Railroads = Auto accessories _ 001 Autos and trucks Total 1Decline. Denominations of Established Nearly €0 Years FINANCIAL AUTO MEN CURB MODEL CHANGE Small Tooling Costs Likely to Help Maintain Earn- ings Levels, By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, July 29.—With the Ford assembly lines shut down until August 9 and the end of the 1937 sea- son near at hand generally, the auto- mobile industry is giving its attention to 1938 changes and to the relationship of these changes to business conditions in the coming Winter and Spring. ‘The change-over in models in some companies—particularly General Mo- tors divisions and Chrysler, which are s8till in heavy production—will prob- ably be done without much tapering off of work. “Pontiac built well over 7,000 cars last week and the same amount the previous week,” writes Burnham Fin- ney in his Detroit letter to the Amer- ican Machinist, “G. M. divisions will go into August with operations high and will suddenly halt work on current models about the middle of the month without much effort at tapering off. After two or three weeks—about as short a shut- down as ever known—manufacture of parts of '38 cars will start.” | Finney believes the changes for '38 | cars aren’t going to be very exciting. “In fact,” he says, “car makers are wracking their brains trying to think of what to feature in their advertising and selling. Most of the innovations that will make customers gawk and talk are being held over until 1939, | ) Business is good enough that cars will be bought in huge numbers for an- | other year without resorting to costly | changes. The relatively small tooling charges | for "38 will help keep up motor earn- ings, despite the fact that the mrreue | in retail prices may not cover recent | boosts in manufacturing expenses.” In New York automobile c1rrle<—' which, like Finney, do not believe the changes in design will be very exciting | —the emphasis, in discussing the '38 | models, is on improved handling of cars and new safety devices | Several companies, it was said, plan | on following the lead of Oldsmobile in using automatic transmission. Com- | mercial usage of the “hill holder,” a | new Bendix product, is also expected in the new models. Studebaker has | already brought out the “no roll back,” | a safeguard going up the hill, and | the new device operates as a further safeauard in going down.
