HELP AND SITUATIONS. ANTITAYLOOS’ = Nlustrated ; by Vincentini THE STORY THUS FAR. Carol Clayton returns from England to Brookdale, Saratoga, with her wealthy fiance, Hartley Madison. She resents her dead Jather's friend, handsome Duke Bradley, a bookmaker. Duke ac- cuses her of marrying for money. Injuriated, Carol postpones her wedding and starts to play the horses so she can pay him her father's $76,000 debt. She chal- lenges him to take her bets, and he agrees. Her luck is phenomenal, but on the racing specigl to Bal- timore he warns her that she is heading for a nervous breakdown. Carol dislikes Fritzi O'Malley, who is always seeking Duke out. She is shocked when Kiffie, Fritzi's flance, confides that he thinks Duke loves Fritzi. CHAPTER Hartley Madison was running a race with time. His schedule during busi- ness hours was always full, and now something had come up about Califor- nia oil concessions which needed all | his attention. He had hoped to be able to attend to the matter by tele- phone, but had decided he must fly out and look the situation over. The most trusted of his three secretaries was taking charge of all callers and calls in the ante-room of his office and he was dictating to the two other. “Put through a call to Newport,” he sald over one of his desk phones. change in my plans, so she won't ex- pect me up for the week end. She fell back in amazement, man with a smile said, “Thank you 80 much,” and walked into the office. Madison looked up in surprise. ‘Sorry if I seem to barge in,” Duke, “but I gathered things were rather frenzied and I have to see you. Mind?” i Madison laughed and held out his left hand, then waved him to a chair. He did not stop talking into the phone. Ambassador Sigora calling from Washington? He had known Hartley Madison was powerful financial circles, but this—keeping smbassadors waiting, giving advice, placing huge orders! Carol had been right when she said if Hartley bet, it would not be with “chicken-feed.” ‘Why shouldn't he put some money on the races? Even if he lost what would seem a small fortune to Duke, it wouldn't make a dent in the Madison millions? “Well, said Madison, *maybe we can get a few words in. Glad to see you. What are you doing in New York?"” “I came to see you.” 'm flattered. Carol didn't tell me” —again the phone rang— “Of course. ‘That's fine. Close for 40 millions.’ “Miss Clayton doesn't know I'm bere,” Duke said when Madison put down the received. “Nobody knows I'm here.” “Well, I'm glad to see you. thing I can do for you?” “One thing. Come to Florida with me.” Madison shook his head. “Don’t I wish I could! But you've heard some of what's going on. I'm jeaving at 3 by plane for California, “You'd best have the pilot head It south.” “What do you mean? Were you fibbing just now—did Carol send you?” “I was telling you God's truth. Bhe'd be furious if she knew I came here, at all. She wouldn't ask me to do anything for her. She never has liked me and every time she sees me she hates me more. I came of my own accord to tell you she needs you.” “Needs me?” there was amazement and fear, too, in his voice. “She’s a sick girl, Madison—she's in & bad way. “Why, I talked to her just five min- utes before you came in—she wanted to speak to me before she left Balti- more.” “Did she sound all right—natural?” Madison spoke into the phone be- fore he answered Duke. “Don’t put any call through until I tell you,” he said. “Not if the presi- dent of the Bank of England calls.
