A—14 »» SABOTAGE CITED IN'FORD HEARING Cutting of Assembly Line Wires Is Charged to Ousted Worker. By the Associated Press. DETROIT, July 29.—An assistant general foreman of the Ford Motor Co. testified today that unsatisfactory workmanship, which he believed was deliberately poor, led to the discharge of Emil Tomkow, an assembly line worker. Earlier in the National Labor Rela- tions Board hearing on its complaint charging the Ford company with un- fair labor practices, Tomkow had testi- fied he was told by a Dearborn police inspector who had obtained the Ford Job for him that he was fired “for talk- ing too much union.” Elmer Fischer, the foreman, who said he ordered Tomkow dismissed, was a witness today. He denied he knew | Tomkow was a member of the United Automobile Workers. Wire-Cutting Reported. Fischer said he investigated a report | that some one on the assembly line | was cutting wires and doing inferior | work. and determined that it hap- pened at the point where Tomkow worked. He said he was satisfied that the actions were deliberate and inten- tional, and ordered Tomkow trans- ferred to another job There, he said, Tomkow “'spent most of his time talking to the other men end loafing. That's why we fired him.” Cutting of four wires in succession, Pischer said, had caused the assembly | line to be held up for three hours. Louis J. Colombo, sr., chief counsel tor the Ford company. said he believed he could round out his defense case by nightfall. Attorneys for the N L. R. B. expressed certainty that tes- timony of rebuttal witnesses would | require not more than a day. The hearing, now midway in its fourth week, has brought forth in recent days testimony of foremen that | dismissal of Ford employes which brought charges of discrimination | from the United Automobile Workers of America was “for cause.” Union Membership Blamed. Board attorneys, through cross- examination, have sought to establish that men were discharged because of union membership. This was one of the points listed in the U. A. W. A's complaint, which became the basis for the N. L. R. B. hearing. Michael Savados, foreman in the Ford glass plant, testified yesterday that he dismissed Birtus C. Hall, one of the men named in the complaint, for leaving his job without permission and for other displays of insubordi- | nation. He denied knowledge that Hall was a union member Of Hall's previous testimony that a eompany guard beat him the day he was fired. Savados said Hall had taken another man's lunch box home by mistake and “when he brought it back the man beat him up.” | RURAL LETTER CARRIERS OPEN SESSION TONIGHT| Representatives Robertson and Burch Invited to Address Vir- ginia Association at Lexington.
