C, MAY 16, 1937—PART FIVE FINANCIAL : : WEEKLY SUMMARY OF THE NEW YORK CURB MARKET 1937 JUMP PREDICTED IN OIL EARNINGS Gain of at Least 33 Per Cent Is Expected by F. & B. Service. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 15.—Increasing demand for petroleum products cou- pled with steady and possibly rising prices under proration, promise to meake 1937 another very good year for the petroleum industry with probably at least a 33 per cent increase in profits over last year, in the opinion of the F. and B. Industries Service, an analysis of 28 industries, published periodically by Fenner & Beane, New York Stock Exchange firm. The out- look for petroleum is one of the most favorable for any industry, according to the survey. First quarter reports indicate that last year's improvement in earnings s being extended into 1937, and sev- eral producing companies have re- ported increases in net of from 50 per cent to 75 per cent over the first quarter of 1936, the report states. Combined net income of eight major oil companies for 1936 totaled approxi- mately $128,400,000, as against $85,~ 600,000 in 1935, a gain of 49.7 per cent. “Today even the more conservative companies in the oil industry antici- pate that the 1937 result will be at least one-third better than in 1936, 19 2% 177% 119% 17% 14 140 131 32% 8% 24%, 1% 42 41y 47 8 35% 126% 136 5% 4 24 48%, 112’1 wccording to the service. WOOL TRADING QUIET AT BOSTON IN WEEK ‘Br the Assoctated Press. BOSTON, May 15 (United States Department of Agriculture). — New business in wool on the Boston market during the last week was extremely dull. Mills took delivery of new wools which they had bought on pre-shearing contracts, but few buyers were in the market for additional quantity. Nominal quotations on spot wools were inclined to ease through lack of current buying interest and increased weights of new wools offered. The easing tendency was more prominent on fleeces than on territory wools. Graded spot combing lengths ©Ohio wools were quoted 41-42 cents in the grease for fine delaine, 43-45 cents for staple combing half-blood and combing three-eighths blood and 42-44 sents for quarter blood. .
