FINANCIAL LONDON MARKETS EXTREMELY QUIET Liquidation to Clear Up Weak Positions Is Conspicuous as Result of Lull. By Cable to The Star. LONDON, May 15. — Coronation festivities, followed by the Whitsun- tide holiday, combined to reduce busi- ness in the securities market to small | proportions. Hence, liquidation, re- sulting from the clearing up of weak positions remaining after last week’s | settlement, was all the more conspicu- ous In the absence of bargain hunters, prices generally weakened, but most resistance was shown by gilt-edged bonds. Many sections, including the latter, also home rails and many in- dustrials, are beginning to show defi- nite signs of nervousness over the MWbor situation, particularly fearing that a possible coal stoppage would involve a spread of general unrest. These and other external problems are likely to react unfavorably upon the internal technical position lett by | the slide in prices during the last few weeks and involving continuation of hesitation and uncertainty, although there is evidence of considerable latent buying power when conditions improve. Parliament will shortly discuss the new tax on profits, but until the posi- tion is clarified and the nature or ex- tent of the promised concessions are disclosed, industrial equities will not attract invest (Copyright, 1937, by the North American Newspaper Alliance, Inc.) Commodity Price Changes for Week BY A. A. PATTON, Associated Press Statistician. NEW YORK, May 15.—Commodity prices swept downward for the sixth consecutive period this week, with sell- ing pressure against agricultural and | Industrial staples still heavy. Live stock alone stood out against the tide, rising to a new top for the year. ‘The general picture, however, was one of slumping quotations. The As- | sociated Press weighted index of 35 important wholesale commodities | dropped to 91.29 per cent of the 1926 average from 91.98 a week ago and compared with 71.65 last ye { Declines among staples makmg up ! the index outweighed advances 3 to 1: 18 fell back, 6 were higher and 11 remained unchanged. Several individual commodities were heavily sold. Rubber broke well over & cent a pound coincident with an- nouncement Germany had boosted the duty on imports. Some commodity men attributed the drop in cocoa to! fear Hitler's search for “ersatz’—sub- stitute—commodities mxgm next hit that product. Suffer Sharp Declines. With corn and wheat setting the | pace, agricultural commodities slipped badly. Heavy rainfall in many hitherto dry areas and the recent Government crop report conjured up visions of considerably larger harvests this \car\ than last to many analysts, and inci- \ dental lower price, 50 rye and couon, were also weak, while oats managed to | eke out a small gain. In the buoyant live stock group hogs and lamb concurred, with cattle | dipping slightly. Official forecasts | pointed out feed prices have been un- | usually high, causing larger shipments | of animals to market, and mdxcamdi smaller supplies would be available ! in a month or so. Foods offered some resistance to the downward surge: eggs, coffee and lard moved up. Setbacks in sugar, flour, butter and cocoa, however, were | more heavily weighted. Textile Issues Drop. ‘Textile quotations dropped to a new low for the year, including wool, | cotton cloth and silk. The inventory | question continued to be the most pressing factor, increasing steadily, | while no atttempt was made to cut production. Industrial staples, including non- ferrous metals, were soft. Steel scrap, lumber, burlap, antimony and tin ceacted, leaving bituminous coal the‘ only item on the plus side of Lhe ledger. The index, with its components based on 1926 as 100, compared as follows: Mavy 14 \’\ \k er ay eek ARo Sommodities_. 01 | Indusulnl 0 Pood Live stock_ Agriculture Textile Nop-Fer_Metal 1937 high, PHILADELPHIA PRODUCE. | : PHILADELPHIA. Receipts were only moderate most of the time. These conditions brought about a slight de- crease in the quotations from those of a week ago. The demand for fowl ‘was especially sluggish. There were few changes in the | prices of broilers. Rocks are slightly |lower than last week at 24a25, but | mixed colors at 23a24 and Leghorns at 20a22 are steady. After fluctuating slightly during the week, eggs recovered fractionally at | the end of the period and are selling about half a cent higher than the low mark of last week. Both current ree |ceipts and medium-sized hennery whites are selling 19, with large hen- | nery whites bringing a cent more. The receipts have continued unusually heavy. More native and nearby market truck made its appearance on the market during the week. 0ld potatoes are dull, with Maryland ‘and Pennsylvania selling 1.75a1.80 per 100 pounds for No. 1s and 1.25a1.65 for ungraded stock.
