RECOVERY HELD - ON SOUND BASIS Standard Statistics Stress Vitality in Face of Ad- verse Factors. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 6—In its weekly summary of the general busi- ness situation, the Standard Statis- tics Co. of New York currently com- ments as follow: “Any apprehension over the sound- ness of the recovery movement should be thoroughly dissipated by the vi- tality shown by business in the last month in the face of a number of adverse developments, including strikes, floods, adverse crop condi- tions and monetary uncertainties, both here and abroad. While aggre- gate business activity in January was moderately below the December level, reports to date indicate that indus- trial operations for the country as a whole were probably 20 per cent ahead of the corresponding month of last year. “The strike situation in the auto- mobile industry apparently reached a crisis this week with the granting of the injunction against the occupancy of General Motors plants by sit- down strikers. In this connection, it should be recognized that, aside from General Motors, the industry has been operating at an unusually heavy rate. “Of much greater importance than the immediate effect on production are the longer term implications of the present strikes. Complete success of the Lewis forces would be definitely adverse. It would mean that a small minority of workers could effectively tie up a number, af_important indus- tries; it would open the way for a labor dictatorship and would place industry at the mercy of the whims of a few labor leaders.” CORPORATE EARNINGS. Baltimore Markets Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, February 6.—The live poultry market showed some fluctu- tions during the week, quotations at the close of the period being slightly lower on several lines than last week, but showing increases of some others. The market continued dull most of the week and the declines for most part amounted to not more than 1 cent a pound. Broilers, at 21a22, were 1 cent lower than last week, but young chickens remained steady at 20a22 for Rocks and 20a21 for mixed colored. Poor and thin stock, however, com- manded better prices at 15a18. In old hens, Rocks sold 17a18, a little lower than last week. A few of the best, however, com- manded 19. Mixed colors were from a cent to 2 cents lower at 17a18, and poor, thin stock was steady at 12al4. Leghorns at 13al5 were a cent lower and roosters remaiie. steady at 10a12. Muscovy ducks were slightly higher at 15a17, but Pekins at 15a16 and the puddle variety at 12al4 were steady. There were no changes in guineas at 45a50 each for birds weighing 2 pounds and over and 35a40 for smaller. Capons remain<d at 24a25 for those weighing 7 pounds or more, with smaller bringing 22a23. Turkcys were slightly higher at 22a23 for young hens, 16a18 for young toms and 12314i for less desirable stock. Eggs Remain Weak. The egg market continued to display weakness during the week and quota- tions declined slightly under fairly |« heavy receipts. There was a slight re=- covery of ! cent a dozen at the close of the period. As a result the quota= | tions are only ?; cent lower than last week at 22 for current receipts and | medium-sized hennery whites and 23 | for large whites. Only moderate demand continues for what little nearby and native gar- den truck there is on the market at the following quotations: Kale, 20a25 bushel; spinach, 25a75 bushel; sweet potatoes, 50a80 bushel; purple top turnips, 20a30 half bushel, and yellows, 50 per 100 pounds. Moderately light receipts of live | stock were reported in all branches of | the local market during the week and the supplies were well distributed over the period, according to the local bu= reau of the Department of Agriculture. Generally a narrow demand existed for | most kinds of live stock as dull action ' and weak prices prevailed in the dressed or consuming trade. Meat Outlet Restricted. | mec HELP ME.N.
