A—14 =« Hitch-Hiker Own Enemy Youth, 20, Journeys 82,000 Miles in 3 Years to Abolish Travel Spongers. HAMPION hitch-hiker and crusader against hitch-hiking are embodied in the person of Arthur Dean Swift, 20- | year-old erstwhile resident of Leeds, England, and South Manchester, Conn. “Eighty-two thousand miles on | the thumb in three years in the in- terest of abolishing hobo practices,” was his story as he sauntered into The Star news room. He sought pub- licity for his campaign, because pub- licity is his meal ticket, theater pass, | hotel bill and other necessities in | championing the cause. | His expense account amounts to ex- | actly zero dollars; his possessions | consist of a half dozen shirts, 10 pairs of socks, 5 suits of underwear, 8 few ties, shaving and teethbrushing | paraphernalia and the clothes on his back. Then, too, he has his scrap book, letters of indorsement by gov- ernmental officials over the country, | including a certified document from Gov. Hoey of North Carolina. The | Tarheel State also has provided his passport, which he carries on the | front of his suit case. His Clothes Cost Nothing. His clothing is donated by smaller | manufacturers who recognize “The Champion Hitch-Hiker of Connecti- | cut.” He was accorded that title by Harllee Branch, Second Assistant Postmaster General. Gov. Cross of Connecticut approved the title. | The champ experiences little trou- | ble in getting food, especially in the | larger cities where “chicken dinners with all the trimmings, even apple pie with cheese” are not out of the ordinary. But chicken dinners or no chicken | dinners he doesn't like Washington, because of the “political stir” and be- | cause “you have to walk too far to get anywhere around here.” | - Virginia, North Carolina, New for every boy or girl under 21 years Hampshire, Vermont and New York and enforce the law. | City are the favorites of this would- | “Seek public support in fining the be hobo abolisher who has traveled motorist unless he is willing to assume the 48 States, Canada, Mexico, Eng- | financial and moral responsibility for land and France. [ But, getting back to his “crusade,” Swift advocates a four-point program for ridding the country of hitch-hikers. | It reads in part as follows: | “Make parents legally responsible ' Governors in 22 States have listened to his plan but as yet they have of- fered no “definite action.” Disil- lusioned no little by the temporary failure of his cause, Swift says he will “continue the work, but if some- thing doesn't come of it soon I will make hitch-hiking my life career.” He plans to leave this Summer on | an exiensive expedition up the “Gold Coast” into Alaska. | ALL SEATS TAKEN | FOR FARLEY DINNER Guest List Limited to Hall's Ca- | pacity—Roosevelt to Make an Address.
