One hundred and thirty-five women will be members of the 1937 legisla- tures in 34 States, according to a re- port made today by the National League of Women Voters. According to the report, the num- ber of women legislators in the States will exceed ‘last year's figure by 5 but will be 14 less than the 149n the LEADS D. G. FIGHT ON TUBERCULOSIS Dr. J. G. Townsend Elected ! to Succeed Dr. White as Association Head. Dr. James G. Townsend, director of health in the Office of Indian Affairs, today was elected president of the District Tuberculosis Association to succeed Dr. William Charles White, who has resigned after serving as head of the organization for the past four years, Dr. Townsend was elected by the Board of Directors at a meeting in the offices of the association at 1022 Eleventh street. A resolution was sdopted thanking Dr. White for his services. Graduate of Central. Dr. Townsend was graduated from Central High School and took his degree at Georgetown University Medical School. He has a distin- guished record of public health work in many flelds. During the World War Dr. Town- _send was put in charge of establish- ing sanitation zones about the can- tonments, and prior to that time he had charge of rural health surveys in the South, " | After the war Dr. Townsend was located in Washington as supervisor in the examination and hospitaliza- tion of ex-service personnel. He has conducted surveys of health condi- tions in Puerto Rico, 'Alaska and vari- ous sections of the United States and for a time was with the consular service for the examination of aliens seeking entry to this country. Resolution of Thanks, - The resolution of thanks for Dr. White read: “Be it resolved by the Board of Di- rectors of the District of Columbia ‘Tuberculosis Association, meeting this 23d day of December, 1936, that they wish to express their profound grati- tude to the retiring president, Dr. William Charles White, for his in- spiring leadership and constructive service for the past four years, during which period many important results have been obtained in broadening the program of the association; also to voice the hope that Dr. White, as an active director and also as chairman of the National Medical Research Committee, will continue to advise and ¢o-operate with the local association in carrying forward the fight to pre- vent and control tuberculosis in the Nation’s Capital City.” Catnip to Nip Cats. ROCKVILLE, Md., December 23.— Donald Parker, 27, colored, was serv- ing two sentences in Maryand State Prison today after a three-judge Cir- cuit court here had denied him a new trial for the slaying of Horace Waters, aged Germantown storekeeper, in 1932, The judges, Hammond Urner, Ar- thur Willard and Charles Woodward, divided on the issue of penalty, and Parker was sentenced to life impris- onment by vote of the latter two judges. Judge Urner, long known by previous decisions as usually favoring life terms, advocated the death pen- alty for Parker, terming the Waters slaying an ‘“outrageous murder.” Parker was convicted in Montgom- ery County Circuit Court eight days ago. His attorney, Walter Dawson, based the plea for a new trial on grounds that the verdict was not war- ranted by the evidence. Parker was serving a life sentence for the murder of Jehn Geary, jr., Prince Georges County storekeeper, in 1934,“when fel- low convicts ‘at Baltimore told prison authorities he had discussed the ‘Waters murder.
