In the Hunt Country Activities Among the Horse Lovers of Vir- ginia and Maryland. BY NINA CARTER TABB. 1SS BETTINA BELMONT of M Middleburg, Va., daughter of { Mrs. Arthur White and the late Raymond Belmont, will . be introduced to society tonight at a ball, to be given by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur White, at the North Wales Club, near Warrenton. Miss Belmont | is one of the loveliest and most im- portant debutantes of the season, and at her “coming out” party will be socially prominent people from Bos- ton, New York, Philadelphia, Balti- more, Washington, Richmond and many places of Virginia and the South. This slender, 18-year-old girl, with brown hair and eyes, is as attractive to older people as she is to those of her own age. She is not only graceful and a belle in the ball room, but is one of the very best horsewomen this hunting country has ever turned out and has been following hounds since she was a very small child. The ball to be given in her honor tonight has been talked of for weeks and is the chief topic of conversation today. Even fox hunting has takena back seat, as the neighborhood is| filling up with visitors, here to unv‘ their respects to this young lady. The | young men going to college who have | grown up with Bettina have been ar- riving home for several days, and numerous dinner parties are to be given tonight before the ball. | The largest of the parties for the | younger set will be given by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Elliott Jenkins and their son, Mr. Alan Nelson Jenkins, at| Leeton Hill, Warrenton, Va. Mr. and Mrs. George Sloane of Warrenton are entertaining at a large party for the parents of debutantes and young men. ‘Mr. and Mrs. Paul Llewellyn are giving & large party, and there are any num- | ber of small dinner parties. North | Wales Club will be beatiufully deco- | rated for the ball tonight, of which much will be told about later on. Loudoun Hounds met at Dry Mill Bridge yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. Judge J. R. H. Alexander, m. {. h,, had s field of 18 follwoing him as he rode to the right of the bridge and cast hounds, going towards the woods, hounds soon picked up a fox, that ran to the Patton place, went along the ridge to cross the Hume place, where they denned after an hour’s run. They started the second fox after this that gave them another run before they lost. Although the ground was frozen and rather tight before the meet, the going was good by the time they * got started. Among those out was Miss Mary Goldthwaite of Baltimore, who is visiting Miss Hebe Waters at her home in Loudoun County. Others following were Mrs. Albert White (for- merly Miss Nancy Rust, and co-mas- ter of Loudoun Hunt with William H. Lipscomb last season), Mrs. Frebus Foster, Miss Anna Hederick, Miss Hebe Waters, Miss Mary Rust, Clark | Hoge, Sam Alexander, John Alex-‘ ander, David Rust, Billy Rust, Dave | Rust, jr.; Fred Malone and James{ di Zerega. Among the parties to be given !n‘ the next week will be a large dance Thursday night (Christmas eve) by Misses Jane and Betsy Rust of Lees- burg at the Thomas Balch Library at 10 o'clock. During intermission a supper will be served at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Rust, Yeocomico. Many of the younger set of Leesburg will go to Washington this afternoon for a cocktail party that is being given by Miss Beverley Moffett, her father, Admiral Moffett, has a Sum- mer home on the Potomac River, near Leesburg, and Miss Beverley Moffett is very popular with the Virginians of this part of the country. Mon- day night, December 28, the Leesburg Assembly will ve held in the Thomas Balch Library. This Christmas dance is given each year and is attended by & large crowd from all over Virginia as well as many from Washington. Dr. and Mrs. Reginald Vickers of Gordonsdale, near The Plains, are en- tertaining at a supper party on Christ- mas night in honor of Miss Mary Randolph Turner and Mr. Hill Well- ford, whose wedding will take place on Saturday, December 26, at the Episcopal Church, The Plains. For the gall Insects give nothing in return to the plant or the world for using that which belongs to others. Another thing about these fasci- nating creatures is that as yet they have not given up their secrets, at least some very important ones, to the scientist or the nature lover. They must be clever to have hidden from the world how they really per- form the miracle of house building. Here is another opportunity to become famous, Malpighi, in the latter part of the seventh century, discovered that the galls found on plants were not deformities, as was at first thought, but the “wart” was made by an insect. Toyland, Downstairs, He thought that the insect stung the plant, much as a bee stings an animal, and that the swelling followed the sting. However, it is found that this is not the actual fact. It is the young- ster who secretes & fluid that irri- tates the ulant, so it throws oui its own juices in order to protect itseif. The gall-insect mother is 100 per cent botanist in identifying her par- ticular plant. She inserts a rather long-stemmed egg into the plant tissue of her chosen host and departs. Her offspring awakens to find him- self surrounded by his favorite food, and begins at once t> devour the walls about him.
