By the Assoclated Press. MILWAUKEE, December 23.—The Nunn-Bush Shoe Co. reported the highest earnings in its history, $360,- 000, which was $32,000 more than in 1929, the previous high year. Earnings in 1935 were $286,000. Although sales were not announced, H. L. Nunn, president, said they were 20 per cent ahead of 1935. Net earpings for the year would have been larger had the company not credited $50,000 to the employes’ pen- sion and retirement fund and pald a bonus of $30,000 to its 1,300 employes. The payments were in addition to the company plan instituted in 1935, which guarantees to each worker in the Milwaukee factory 52 pay checks a year and a definite percentage of the value of every pair of shoes produced. What that percentage will be this year will be figured after the close of the calendar year. Wesson Oil & Snowdrift. NEW YORK, December 23.—Steel ingot output is maintaining a volume seldom equaled at this time of year, Iron Age said today in its weekly re- view. “Based on a five-day week,” the trade journal says, “the rate for the country is about 78 per cent and may go higher next week, when there will be no holiday observance. Although production is off slightly in some dis- tricts, the reverse is true in the Ohio valleys, where the rate has risen from 80 to 84 per cent. “Unless labor trouglps in the auto- mobile industry are® speedily settled widespread shutdowns are likely to occur. * * * Some mills have received Instructions to postpone shipments of sheets and strip. While the steel in- dustry is watching the situation with anxiety, delays in rolling automobile steel may afford some relief in the in- tense pressure being put on sheet and strip mills. “Meanwhile, a very heavy volume of business in bars, shapes and plates is being piled on the almost unprece- dented tonnage of other products booked in November. * * * “As an indication the large volume of buying of the past few weeks has been speculative only to a small de- gree, many consumers have come into the market for additional tonnages of sheets and strip, paying the higher prices quoted for the first quarter.” The review said there is another runaway market in scrap, with further advances of 50 cents a ton at Chicago ! and Philadelphia and 25 cents at | Pittsburgh, bringing the Iron Age | composite price to $17.75.
