B—6 »» BRIBERY ATTEMPT CHARGEDTOE.0.P. Pack of $5 Bills Offered to Suppress Nice Statement, Reporter Alleges. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, December 16.—An attempt to bribe a reporter of the Sun during a Republican testimonial dinner here lasi night following Gov. Nice’s charges of party appointees’ disloyalty was alleged in.that news- paper today. The Sun quoted the Governor as saying: “I know that among some of those I have appointed to office, loyalty has not been accorded me. I am going to build up the party, but not pay for it through the appointment of those who are trying to ruin it.” The newspaper reported that at this point in his speech, the chief executive asked: “Is there a sun representative here ‘writing this up?” The paper added that a party leader Fesponded: “Don’t worry, Governor, I'll take eare of him.” As the reporter rose to leave, the Bun said, he was advised not to go. The party leader followed the news- paper man out into the hall and tried to press a folded pack of $5 bills into his hand, the Sun said, but the reporter declared: “I'm sorry, I don’t take bribes,” returned the money and ‘walked back into the banquet hall. He was advised that the Governor wanted to see him before he left, according to the newspaper. After the executive had finished his speech the reporter approached the Governor, quoted by the Sun as fol- lows: “Please don’t ride me in your story. It's all right to say that I mentioned disloyalty to the party, but I would rather you wouldn’t quote me literally. Write a joking, humorous story.” NICE DENIES KNOWLEDGE.
