COUNSEL T0 GROUP BOND RACKET DATA Lebowitz Expects to Make Summary of Probe to Grand Jury. Louis Lebowitz, Washington and Mount Rainier, Md., attorney, who started the investigation of Prince Georges County, Md., policing meth- ods, was expected to appear before the grand jury in Upper Marlboro today to summarize his findings as the panel closes its inquiry. Also scheduled for testimony were three Capital motorists who have claimed victimization through alleged police-bonding collusion. Their* ap- pearance would bring the total num- ber of witnesses who have testified to 23, Jury to Make Report. According to current indications, the jury will probably make its re- port tomorrow. The group has been disbanded since Friday, when it ended the third day of its special session. State’s Attorney Alan Bowie and Special Prosecutor Ogle Marbury, it Is understood, have already drafted presentment papers which merely re- quire the jury foreman’s signature to become actual indictments. ‘This morning’s session was to be devoted to consideration of the re- cent attempt to rob the Bank of Brandywine. Three Glen Burnie, Md., vouths are in the county Jjail at Upper Marlboro where they face charges of robbery attempts. One of the trio also is charged with assault with intent to kill. Cashier Willlam T. McPherson, 65, of T. B, was wounded when he sounded the burg- lary alarm during the hold-up. Took Findings to Club. Lebowitz began studying police rec- ords last Summer and subsequently took his findmgs to the Keystone Au- tomobile Club. Attorneys of the club then began collecting affidavits from aggrieved motorists. The grand jury recommended the special session when it recessed on October 26, and Mar- bury was later appointed special pros- ecutor by Circuit Court Judge Joseph C. Mattingly. PBighteen witnesses have gone before the jury. Onme of these was Walter Newrath, Keystone attorney and audi- tor, who assisted in the analysis of law enforcement records and court Public Enemy Merle Vandenbush, Wiscon- sin desperado sought by G- men. VANDENBUSH TOPS MAN-HUNT LIST Capture of Harry Brunette Makes Pal Principal Foe of G-Men. BY REX COLLIER. Merle Vandenbush, Wisconsin des- perado, today topped the list of pub- lic enemies wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for kidnaping. ‘The dramatic capture in New York City yesterday of Harry Brunette, ac~ cused with Vandenbush of the kid- naping Armistice day of a New Jersey State trooper, leaves Vandenbush in undisputed possession of first place on the G-men's “snatch” list. ‘The topmost position was held by Alvin Karpis until last May, when he was arrested in New Orleans by a raiding squad led by F. B. I Director J. Edgar Hoover. There were no “big time" kidnap- ers eligible to succeed to the No. 1 position until Brunette and Vanden- bush qualified by their daring abduc- papers on which the prosecutors have built their documenmry evidence. MRS. HEWITT NOT TO BE EXTRADITED California Drops Mayhem Charge Becaues of Daughter's Re- luctance to Testify, B the Assoclated Press, SAN FRANCISCO, December 16— Because of her daughter’s reluctance to appear against her, Mrs. Maryon Cooper Hewitt will not be returned here from New Jersey for prosecution on a charge of conspiracy to commit mayhem. District Attorney Matthew Brady announced the case would be dropped after counsel for the daughter, Ann| Cooper Hewitt, said she would be an | unwilling witness, Brady, who ob- | tained an extradition order after months of effort, expressed regret he | bad not been notified sooner. The charge was based on testimony by Miss Hewitt before the grand Jury | that she was tricked by her mother and two physicians into an operation which left her sterile. The physi- cians were acquitted of the charge. Russell Tyler, attorney for Miss Hewitt, declared she will continue, however, her $500,000 damage sult against Mrs, Hewitt and the physi- cians, HOPE MENDENHALL BOY MAY LIVE IS EXPRESSED Xansas City Youth, 5, Showeréd ‘With Gifts and Suggestions for Treatment. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1936. notorious bank robbers—is Maurice Denning, 28-year-old Iowa gang leader, who is being widely sought by the F. B. I. for more than a dozen bank robberies in central States during 1934 and 1935. Denning is the only member of his gang still at large. Recently the bureau distributed 250,- 000 special posters bearing Denning’s photograph and description. 2 Hugh Gant and Alva Dewey Humt, wanted for bank robbery in Florida and other Southern States, also rank high on the list of bank robbers being hunted by the bureau. Hoover’s men today were concen- trating on Vandenbush, who appar- ently separated from Brunette after the pair allegedly effected the $8500 robbery of the Citizens’ State Bank at Monroe, Wis,, on November 17 last. This robbery occurred just six days after the kidnaping of the trooper. Bride Wounded. Brunette headed back east and within 10 days had married a New York City girl under the “alias” of Lake. It was this girl who was slightly wounded in the gun battle with Fed- eral agents early yesterday. Vandenush and - Bruneite have been friends for years. They were born in Green Bay, Wis, and have stuck together during a lurid career in crime that eventually landed them in the Ohio State Penitentiary for as- sault with intent to rob. Transferred to a prison farm at London, Ohio, they escaped on July 12 last. ‘The G-men should have little diffi- culty in identifying Vandenbush if | they capture him. While he may have dyed his light red hair, he will have dificulty hiding a purple birthmark on the back of his neck, numerous scars on his head and arms, and tat- tooed cross, horseshoe and cowgirl on his arms. Vandenbush is 29, four years older than Brunette; of short, medium build and has gray eyes and fair complex- ion. He has a long string of “aliases” listed in the F. B. I files.
