TOPS 3YEARAOLD, ‘ALL-AGE CLASSES Turf Writers Pick Pompoon as Ace 2:Year-0ld Colt, Apogee, Filly Queen. B the Associated Press. ALTIMORE, December 5. — Granville, William Woodward’s fine colt, which won a half dozen big stake races last Summer after tossing his rider in the Kentucky Derby, was named today as the best race horse of the 1936 season by the Nation's turf writers. A poll conducted by the Turf aid Sport Digest listed the son of Gallant Fox not only as the best 3-year-old by an overwhelming margin, but as the best all-age racer. Pompoon, owned by Jerome H. Louchheim of Philadelphia, was named the best 2-year-old colt and Hal Price Hndleys Apogee was voted the best ar-old filly. . No Doubt About About Granville. HERE was no noticeable doubt in the minds of the 258 writers par- ticipating in the poll as to Granville's superiority. Scored on the basis of three points for first place, two for sec- ond and one for third, Granville re- ceived 744 points out of a possible 774 in the 3-year-old division and 606 in the all-age class. Morton L. Schwartz's Kentucky Derby winner, Bold Venture, was second among the 3-year-olds with 476 points and Joseph E. Widener's Brevity third with 110. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt'’s Discov- erv. leading money winner of 1935, was runner-up in the all-age division with 372 points, while A. A. Baroni’s Top Row beat out Elwood Sachsenmaier’s Roman Soldier for third place, 136 to 112. Granville Wins §110,295. AH‘ER his misfortune in the Ken- tucky Derby, Granville went on to finish first in seven of his ten starts, winning a total of $110.295. He lost twice to Bold Venture, including the Derby defeat, once to his stablemate, ‘Teufel, and once to an older horse, Firethorn. The colt’s triumphs in- cluded the Belmont Stakes, the Law- rence Realization, the Arlington clas- sic, and three of Saratoga's classic races, the Kenner, the Saratoga Cup. The voting was closer for 2-year-old honors, although Pompoon and Apogee “both received good margins. The Louchheim colt which brought only $2,000 in the Saratoga sales in 1935, won a total of $83,420, finishing first six times and second twice in eight starts. The biggest triumph was the | winning of the Belmont Futurity, in| which Pompoon set a track record. His sire, Pompey, won the 1925 Bel- mont Futurity. Reaping Reward, from Mrs. Ethel F. Mars’ Milky Way stable, took sec- @ ond honors among the colts with 488 votes to 106 for Privileged, from War- ren Wright's Calumet Farm Stable. Second to Apogee, with 306 points, came Mrs. W. M. Jeffords’ Wand. Bunched in a close race for third place ‘were Mrs. Mars’ Talma Dee, Goldey F., the famous $150 horse from Mrs. ‘W. A. Bridges' Stable, and the King Ranch's Dawn Play. Harrington, Brazilian polo | year-olds and upward; | SPORTS. | FIRST RACE—SHANTEB, SIS ROYAL, MISS EPE SHANTEB, a gelded son of Fly- ing Ebony, has finished second ur better in the only four races of his career, and in the opening race Monday he appears to hold a decid- ed edge. He is the best bet of the day. SIS ROYAL has worked swiftly and gets the call over MISS EPE for the place. SECOND RACE—WITLESS, CON- TRITE, YARDSTICK. WITLESS, a daughter of Gal- lant Fox, has displayed some sharp early foot against good 2-year-olds on the major tracks this year, but she has never been able 10 hold it. CONTRITE is in fine fettle and showed a smart race recently. YARDSTICK figures third best, THIRD RACE — GENTLEMEN, HOGARTY, SUNNY SUSAN. GENTLEMEN, a 3-year-old son of Westy Hogan, has been moving along at.a rapid pace ir his trials at Charles Town, and will likely come as a warm naddnck tip in here. He is pretty far down «n the also-eligible list, but if he gets in he’ll be tough to beat. HOGARTY loves the Charles Towr track and gets the call over SUNNY SUSAN for the place money. FOURTH RACE — SILVERY CLOUD, DOUGLAS F., GRACE BUNTING. Charlie Feltner, who is always successful on the “bush-league” circuit, will be nicely represented Selections for fast track at Charles Town tomorrow. (BEST BET—SHANTEB.) by SILVERY CLOUD in the fourth, DOUGLAS F. possesses flenty of speed and may head GRACE BUNTING. FIFTH RACE—WHISKORA, SUN- DROPS, BRIGHT GIRL. The rankest kind of platers will meet in the fifth and we are cast- ing our vote for WIHISKORA, a gelding that has shown his best speed at Charles Town, although he managed to finish third to Jack Low and Royal Veil the other aay. SUNDROPS is in grand form and loves the track. Will be exceed- ingly hard to trim. BRIGHT GIRL figures over the others. SIXTH RACE—MISS CATALAN, COAT TAILS, SEA FINN, MISS CATALAN, a miss that usually shows high speed at the smaller tracks, is reported to be in first-class condition. Trawer A. L. Leith whipped her into fine thape at Bowie, where she failed to dis- piay any speed, and this appears to be a nifty spot to turn her lucse. COAT TAILS figures to nip SEA FINN for the place. SEVENTH RACE— QUEEN ELIZ- ABETH, STAND OUT, IRISH VOTE. The seventh finds a pretty good fleld of distance runners compet- ing and it's going to be a hard fight all of the way. QUEEN ELIZ- ABETH, which has found trouble negotiating the sharp turns re- cently, is our selection to come through at good odds. STAND OUT should handle IRISH VOTE.
