- F.B.|.SOLVES CASE OF JUNE ROBLES Arizona Child Not Actually Kidnaped, Grand Jury Will Be Told. The Federal Bureau of Investiga- tion has solved the mystery of little June Robles’ disappearance and return to Tucson, Ariz., in 1934, and the so- Jution, described by officials as “star- tling,” will be disclosed to a Federal grand jury at Tucson beginning to- morrow. The bureau already has branded the strange case secretly as “not a kidnaping,” it is learned on the best authority. Evidence supporting that verdict, uncovered by F. B. 1. agents during & two and one-half year investigation, will be ‘unfolded to the grand jury by a parade of approximately 50 wit- nesses marshaled by the G-men. “The case is cleared up. We will elose it officially, as far as the F. B. I 48 concerned, when the grand jury receives the evidence Monday,” a re- sponsible official declared. “This evi- dence will show conclusively there | was no violation of the Federal kid- naping statute; in fact, no kidnaping at all” | Special agents, handwriting experts and other investigators who have | been working on the case will head | the list of witnesses summoned to appear before the jurors. Indictment Unlikely. In view of the non-Federal nature of the evidence, there appears little like- lihood that the grand jury will hand down any indictments in the case. Whether State authorities will desire | to act on the same evidence is a matter of speculation. In a previous grand jury hearing of May, 1935 Oscar Robson, former Tucson night club operator and friend of the Robson family, was indicted | on a charge of mailing notes to the 7-year-old girl's parents, demanding $15,000 ransom. This indictment was | dropped several weeks ago with the | approval of Attorney General Cum- mings. ‘The Robles girl disappeared in April, 1934. The “ransom” notes arrived shortly thereafter. Nineteen days later, while F. B. I. agents were conducting an intensive investigation of the case, an airmail letter, postmarked Chicago, gave directions for finding the girl in | the desert, about 9 miles from Tucson. Agents of the bureau went to the | designated spot and found June in a vermin-infested iron box sunk in a| hole in the ground on a barren stretch | of desert land. She told an incoherent story of her experiences. No Remaining Unsolved Case. Crossing off of the Robles case from the F. B. L list of kidnapings leaves no unsolved Federal kidnapings on the books, F. B. I. officials said. With that terse comment they dis- posed of two widely publicized cases, the disappearance of the Browe baby in Detroit last September and the “kidnaping” of Dr. Milton Ochs in Chicago last November, as cases not within their jurisdiction. ‘The recent kidnaping of a New Jer- sey State tropper by two men and a woman is on the official list of kid- napings, but is regarded as solved be- cause the kidnapers have been “defi- nitely identified.” The case will not be concluded, however, until the kid- napers, alleged to be Merle Vanden- bush and Harry Brunette, bank rob- bers, are in custody. The Browe case, an investigation by ’ Kidnaped? MUSICIANS ASSEMBLE TO HONOR ZIMBALIST 25th Anniversary of American Debut Is Observed at Bee- thoven Association. BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 5.—One of the most elaborate collections of emi- nent musicians assembled in recent years gathered tonight at the Beethoven Association to honor Efrem Zimbalist. It was “Zimmy's” twenty-fifth anni- versary—of his American debut, that is. After dinner there was a skit writ- ten by Samuel Chotzinoff, the ambi« dextrous musician who uses a piano and a typewriter interchangeably. Marc Connelly was narrator through- out. In this hilarious offering Zimbalist was impersonated by Jascha Heifetz. His entrance was made in swaddling clothes. Later in the course of the 25 scenes he put on knee pants. ‘Walter Damrosch appeared as & Rus- sian grand duke, the one who spone sored Zimbalist, and Mrs. Heifets (Florence Vidor) was the grand duchess who gave a party at which the boy Zimbalist disgraced himself by swilling down the water in the finger bowl.
