Failure of the Fascists to break through the government defenses might well cause Italy and Germany to withdraw their active help, these persons theorized. Heavy government artillery fire was reported from the Asturias sector, on the northern front. Col. Miguel Arranda's insurgent general headquarters at Grado, just ‘west of Oviedo, these reports said, was hit during the bombardment. Fascists Attack Suburb. Strong forces of insurgent shock troops, attempting to break through government lines on the El Escorial road, attacked the suburban village of Pozuelo de Alarcon today. Supported by tanks and planes, in- surgent commanders hurled wave after wave of troops against Socialist con- centrations in the new battleground 7 miles west of the capital. (Dispatches from the Fascist side said occupation of the village was un- officially reported at headquarters.) Government troops were warned of the impending infantry assault by a squadron of Socialist planes scouting the Western area. The pilots observed the start of the advance and signaled suburban commanders. Leaflets Are Dropped. The planes dropped thousands of leaflets on the Fascist concentrations, inviting the insurgent soldiers to lay down their arms and surrender. “Otherwise Madrid will be your tomb,” the attackers were warned. ‘The Emergency Defense Council loosed another propaganda barrage against the insurgents with rockets fired into Fascist-occupied territory west of the city. Each rocket was packed with 250 ecolored “surrender invitations.” Gen. Jose Miaja, president of the defense junta, entertained members of tae British Parliament who ar- rivea in the capital to view develop- ments in the civil war, The visitors participated in toasts predicting the “triumph of Spanish democracy.” (Socialist peace overtures to Fascist Gen. Jose Varela were reported in a broadcast from Seville by Gen. Gon- zalo Queipo de Llano, insurgent com- mander.) Victoriano Casajus, govern- ment commander on the eastern coast with headquarters at Valencia. “The war will inevitably spread to embroil other powers,” he predicted. “The Mediterranean is full of ships of various nations. Onme of these days, Gen. Franco's boats or a vessel belonging to a sympathetic nation will attack a ship belonging to some foreign~ nation. That will be the spark which will set off an interna- tional conflict.” VICTORY IS REPORTED. Fascists Claim Capture of Village West of Madrid. WITH THE FASCIST FORCES OUTSIDE MADRID, November 29 (Delayed in Transmission) (#)—Fas- cist occupation of the village of Pozuelo de Alarcon, 7 miles west of Madrid, was reported unofficially at insurgent headquarters today. The suburban town fell to Fascist shock troops, it was said, after heavy fighting with Socialist militiamen. The hillside stretching from Casa del Campo Park toward Pozuelo was the scene of feverish activity while government gunners bombarded the advancing insurgents with a steady rain of shells. Dozens of Fascist tanks crawled back and forth over the hillside amid a storm of shrapnel. But the deadly splinters apparently failed to reach the attacking troops who were seen continuing their advance out of range of the artillery. ‘The village itself lay over the crest of the hill where horsemen disap- peared and reappeared, indicating Fascist cavalrymen headed the ad- vaneing' column. Insurgent guns raked the Socialist lines along the M ares River, where a pontoon bridge into Uni- versity City has been under such heavy fire for days it could be crossed only in tanks. The guns also were trained on a clump of trees which hid a govern- ment battery. The Socialist shells were sprinkled into the far western end of Casa Del Campo over an area several miles square. At one time exploding government shells drove newspaper men into a cellar for protection. Fourteen Socialist scouting planes reconnoitered over the battle lines, but the Fascist air armada failed to ap- pear. FRENCH PLANE FIRED ON. Commercial Mail Ship Not Struck by Spanish Bullets. PARIS, November 30 (#).—A Span- ish government fighting plane fired 200 machine-gun bullets at a French commercial mail plane near Alicante yesterday, officials of Air France re- ported today. They declared the plane was not struck. The regular transport plane on the commercial line between Toulouse and Casablanca, French Morocco, was fly- ing at 6,000 feet outside Alicante when it was sighted by the Spanish govern- ment scouting plane, company offi- cials said. Spanish authorities apologized for the attack, they declared, explaining the Socialist pilot thought the trans- port ship was an insurgent bomber. KILLED IN AIR RAID. Alicante Inhabitants Siain as Insur- gent Planes Attack. VALENCIA, Spain, November 30 (P)—Officials said last night a large toll of life was taken in Saturday night's insurgent air raid on Alicante. After the first panic, they said, the inhabitants sought refuge in an or- derly fashion, and by so doing prob- ably prevented larger casualties. Valencia last night prepared for attack from either land or sea as citizens were warned to observe regula- tions and warning sirens. Windows in the center of the city were boarded up so that light could not seep through and give enemy air raid- ers targets for their bombs. The city was put on its guard, while War Minister Indalecio Prieto de- clared the Spanish civil war will last “at least through the Winter” and will “see a far more intensive stage” than the present bloody - battle for possession of Madrid. The District League of Women Voters and the National Education Association were on record today in favor of unqualified repeal of the “red rider” penslizsing the District public school teacher who advocates or ex- plains the workings of communism. “Repeal of this viclous statute will be one of our first objectives at the riext session of Congress, and we do not propose to depart from our deter- mination to insist upon outright re- peal,” Mrs. Willlam Kittle, president of the league, said. Mrs. Kittle made her statement in reply to the stand of Chairman Norton of the House District Committee, who said in Pelham, N. Y., that she would seek & modified repeal waiving the necessity for the teacher to take an oath he or she had not taught or ad- vocated communism, but making it unlawful to advocate communism in the class room. “It must be decided,” Dr. William G. Carr, research director of the National Education Association, said last night at PFirst Congregational Church, “whether a ‘glaring legislative threat will be left to stand as an example to the rest of the country. “Anywhere else, the issue would be local, or at most, State-wide. Here ‘we see it placed ir the national arena. “Regimentation of minority thinke ing by majority legislation is repugnant to the highest ideals of our form of government and of our public schools. ‘This is the oppression, the intolerance which darkened the days of Pasteur, of Galileo, of Socrates, of Jesus.” Dr. Carr, speaking at the church’s forum on peace, asked the audience to support a four-point program to bulwark the freedom of teaching. He asked: Complete freedom for competent teachers to present the facts and to encourage an unbiased, tolerant dis- cussion concérning social, economic, biologic and other issues. Repeal of “insulting” legislation re- quiring teachers to sign oaths of al- legiance and repeal of all other at- tempts to regiment schools. GROSNER 0 DAFFRON IS HELD BY INDIANA POLICE Kidnaping and Robbery Suspect Is Captured ~ With Woman. BY the Associated Press. INDIANAPOLIS, November 30.— The law of averages finally caught up with George Daffron, 26, of Vincennes, Ind., a dapper Midwest desperado who boasts he’s “the best automobile driver in the country.” Since October 27 police have set numerous traps for Daffron, wanted on charges ‘of robbery, burglary, auto theft and kidnaping, but he slipped through every one of them until yes- terday. A squad of State policemen, aided by Daviess County officers, sure prised Daffron and & woman com- panion in their locked car in a corn fleld near Elnors and arrested them without firing & shot. Daffron was brought here last night and locked up on charges of kidnap- ing and auto theft. His woman com- panion, Lillian Simpson, 22, of Middle- town, Ohio, was booked on & charge of vagrancy. Daffron first became the object of & wide-spread police hunt after a shooting affray in a Cincinnati, Ohio, tavern several weeks ago. Two women companions named him and a James Cotton as the men involved. The kidnaping charge here de- veloped on October 29 when Mrs. John Lanigran told police a man, boasting that he was Daffron, and a woman forced her to drive them to the home of Daffron’s brother to obtain a gun. She called police but the couple fled. Police said Daffron admitted the affair but denied doing the shooting in the fight at Cincinnati and also denied kidnaping Mr. and Mrs. James Carter and their small child recently. 3GEN ONS.
