(Copyright, 1086, by the Associated Press.) EW YEAR DAY arrives and N the Du Pont families of Wil- mington obeerve a family tra- dition carried through many generations. The women dress their prettiest and stay at home beside heavy-laden buffets and wine carts to greet the day's guests. But the men put on their top hats, fill the back seats of their cars with sweetmeats and go the rounds of all the Du Pont homes. It’s the one day of the year in which all the Du Ponts see all the Du Ponts. That's one custom to which the young and handsome Franklin Roose- velt, jr., probably- will be introduced when he marries the beauty of the Wilmington clan, Ethel du Pont, in June. But Miss du Pont no doubt will be inducted into just as interesting a Roosevelt custom. Their most famous one centers around birthday anniver- saries in the family. The family gathers wherever the President and his wife happen to be. A magnificent cake is brought to the dinner table. It never bears more than 21 candles, for age stops there for the Roosevelts as far as the birth- day anniversary cake iy concerned. Each diner lights one candle and makes a wish for the birthday anni- versary child. If any remain un- lighted, the round starts again, and those lucky enough to secure a second candle may make a wish for them- selves. Traditions Flourish, Those are just two outstanding traditions which will enrich the fu- ture lives of the country’s No. 1 ro- mancers of the day. There are many others, For instance, the homes. The Du Pont manor is a big place with ma- hogany furniture, fireplaces, books and one “show room,” the two-story en- trance hall in which the bride's fa- ther has hung his hunting trophies. ‘The Roosevelt home is another com- fortable, rambling place with books and mahogany. But insteadof hunt- ing trophies it has the marine treas- ures of the President. There will be a slight difference in the spirit of the places, however. The Roosevelts like to play. They spring | pranks on each other. If the Du Ponts are pranksters, the world doesn’t know it.
