BY J. G. DONLEY, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 30.—If the temerarious prophet who rose up in the gay nineties had really been a man of vision, he would have hit the nail of the future more squarely on the head than he did. He opined that some day the horseless carriage would seriously challenge the popu- larity of the bicycle. ‘What actually happened was that the automobile laid the bicycle low— but not forever. Almost two genera- tions later, the bicycle has increased its production more than tenfold in a few short years and this year will set a production total which will put the peak of bloomer-girl years in the shade. The peak year of the old bike days saw production of 1182000 two- | wheeled vehicles. About 25 per cent of that was for export, and there was | & considerable “carry over” into the | next year, so that production and sales were not so nearly synonymous | as nowadays. Last year saw produc- tion up to 639,000—a big jump—and this year is expected to double that figure. In their latest weekly business re- view Dun & Bradstreet said: “Bicy- cle plants have been practically on capacity schedules all year, but ship- ments are trailing orders and some of the Christmas orders may be left “ FLORSHEIM SHOE 3 ANNOUNCES EXTRA 425 Cents a Share Ordered in Addition to Usual Class “A” Payment. New York & Queens New York & Queens Electric Light behind.” After the boom of the 90s folded, the bike output dropped below 200,000 a year, with a minimum demand sus- tained by school children, delivery boys and some workers and old-timers by. For the comeback of the bike credit must be dished out in two di- rections: First, to the advertising and sales promotion of the cycle trades, and second, to the evolution of wom- ankind from the dainty and demure to the do-everything, dare-devil, out door-sports-loving damsels of today. Promotion pressure was sagely cen- tered upon points whence fashions and news spread like wildfire—Palm Springs, Calif., and Miami and Palm Beach. The new kind of “knee ac- tion” went big in those spots. Bikes took the movie lots by storm, and now some stars have their names painted on the frames of vivid hue, with liberal trimming of shining chromium plate to set off the stream- lined modern version of the veloci- pede. Tires have gone measuring 212 inches, against the 13 up grandpapa’s liver. (Copyrisht, 1936.) FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW Y! 56-46 FREIGHT LOADINGS. NEW YORK.
