A-8 XAVIER STATUE PUT INTO PLAGE Ralsed Into Nlche Over Main Door of New St. Francis Xavier Church. An heroic statue, of St. Francis Xavier, Spanish sixteenth century missionary credited with the conver- | sion to Christianity of some 700,000 Orientals, yesterday was raised into place in a niche over the front door of the new St. Prancis Xavier Church now under construction at Twenty- eighth street and Pennsylvania ave- | nue southeast. ‘The statue, said to be the only one of Xavier in Washington, was donated by Mrs. Agatha Haines, 900 Ninth street southeast, and is one of a num- ber of pieces of sculpture and bag relief to be placed in the new church. The building will be ready for dedi- cation about the end of February, according to its pastor, Rev. Joseph V. Buckley. “The statue of Xavier is the first sculptured conception of the saint,” Father Buckley said. “The statue was inspired by an Old World paint ing of St. Frhncis Xavier and was developed by construction of a series | of models by the sculptor, Lawrence Pefferly, whose studios are at 19 M | street northeast. Pefferly was trained .| in Munich and Nuremberg and we | feel that he has produced a work | which will rank high among the fine local examples of religious statuary.” Peflerly ‘now is working on a Cal- vary group, which will be an exem- plification of the Fourth Word, Father Buckley said. This group is to go over the high altar of the church. It, like the Xavier, will be of modernized Romanesque design. ‘The sculptor also is to carve two herolc figures of seraphims for the structure. All these figures are to be in Indiana limestone, of a lighter shade than the stone of which the church itself is constructed. The church also will contain five large interior panels, in high relief, showing high points in the life of Xavier. St. Francis Xavier, known as the *“Apostle of the Indies,” spent 11 years in the Orient and left behind him organized Christian communities from Malays to Japan. He died: in| China in 1552. The new church is to be dedicated by Archbishop Michael J. Curley of Baltimore late in the Winter. Coughlin in Bermuda. HAMILTON, Bermuda, November 24 (#)—Father Charles E. Coughlin of Detroit arrived yesterday aboard the Monarch of Bermuds for an indefinite stay. Traveling quietly, he was recog- nized by his fellow passengers only | yesterday. He will celebrate mass at | the Church of St. Theresa here next | Sunday. | At the, left workmen are shown raising to its place ubove the door of the new St. Francis WINTER'S COMING! 1t's time to Xavier Chirch a 900-pound limestone statue of Xavier.
