REAL MODEL LOW-COST HOMES DISCUSSED Contractors of District and Nearby Hear of Bethesda Group. Addressing a meeting of 150 Dis- trict, Maryland and Virginia con- tractors and builders, lumber and Government officials, five speakers last Monday discussed the subject of small home building. The meeting was held at the United States Chamber of Com- merce Building. The occasion was the opening of three small low-cost homes just com- pleted by the National Lumber Manu- facturers’ Association and the Na- tional Retail Lumber Dealers’ Asso- ciation at Bethesda, following designs recently published by F. H. A. The purpose of the demonstration, according to Wilson Compton, secre- tary and manager of the National Lumber Manufacturers’ Association, is to help get the small home building industry moving. Dr. Compton stressed the point that these three small homes indicate that direct building costs for such houses, ex- clusive of financing and sales costs, and profit, can, in most communities, be kept between $2,500 and $3,000, making possible modern, up-to-date dwellings equipped with gas, water and electricity, at prices which men and women with small incomes can afford to pay. Inquiries Flood F. H. A. Bruce A. Wilson, F. H. A., reported | 1,000 letters of inquiry a day being received at the small homes depart- ment of F. H. A. and 500 letters per week coming in from the radio broad- casting program of the department, ESTATE. D. work any differently near the windows than it does in the middle of the room, Yet conditions right at the window are different, as every one knows who has tried sitting there on & cold Winter's day. ‘There is & simple device which, at s moderate price, eliminates conden- sation on the window panes. It is called, appropriately, a windowstat, and acts as a sort of safety alarm patrolling the window areas for signs of condensation. The minute the hu- midity in the vicinity of the window gets up to 90 per cent, even though the humidity for the rest of the house may be only 60 per cent, the window- stat signals the main humidifying spray that things are getting pretty damp on the cold zone, and it had better turn itself off. You can see what a boon this new control is, when you stop to consider all the stained window sills and walls under windows which it quietly and quickly prevents. When a humidifier in a nice, dry place—such as the cellar ~—is running the whole show accidents will happen. Humidifiers need watch- dogs like the windowstat. The au control is usually placed at the window on the coldest side of the house, to act as checkmate on the main control. It is & compact little device which in no way spoils the appearance of the window nor in- terferes with the light. No connec- tions to outdoors have to be made. The regulating element within the de- Vvice is—believe it or not—human hair, which registers the slightest temper- ature and moisture change, according to the engineers. Small Electric Oven. A small electric oven fits into 2 feet of shelf space, yet cooks for 6 to 10 people. It's thermostatically con- trolled over a wide heat range and heavily insulated to conserve heat. .
