'A—14 &» CONTINUESTORIS August Passenger Total of 13,402,406 Is 7.8 Per Cent Above 1935. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Revenue passenger traffic on the Capital Transit lines continaes to mount steadily, according to the latest report filed with the Public Utilities Commission, covering August and the first eight months of 1936. Total revenue passengers carried in August numbered 13,402,406, or an in- crease of 7.8 per cent over the record for August, 1935. This gain, however, 18 reduced to 5.13 per cent when the passengers carried by the Washingtcn Rapid Transit Co. in August, 1935, are included, the lines not having been merged a year ago. The eight months’ climb in passengrr traffic is still better, 112,024,670 fare- paying passengers having used the companies’ lines, an increase of 12.- 360,619 over the like period in 1935, or a gain of 12.4 per cent. This per- eentage figure is also reduced some- what if the bus-line passengers carried a vear ago are included. Referring to the August financial report, Vice President Heberle said: Car Mileage Increases. “A direct comparison of the opera- tions for August of the two years can- not be made, not only because of the exclusion of the Washington Rapid Transit Co. in 1935, but also because of substantial adjustments included in August, 1935, for retroactive wage in- creases covering the period from April 1 to August 8 and adjustments in bus depreciation accruals covering the period from January 1 through July of 1935. These two adjustments also affected tax accruals. “Total car and bus miles operated in August, 1936, were 2.650.350, repre- senting an increase of 160,928, or 6.46 per cent over the miles operated by both companies in August, 1935. “The average fare per revenue pas- senger was 5.95 cents in August, 1936. as compared with an average of 6 cents for both companies a year ago. “The average fare per total passenger was 4.44 cents as compared with 4.46 | cents for both companies a year ago.” Earnings for Eight Months. Details from the financial statement #how that operating revenues in Au- gust stood at $835.950.67, an increase of $63.783.45, or 8.3 per cent. At the same time, because of adjustmem.s figured in the August report last year, the operating expenses, taxes and de- preciation this year showed an im- | Pprovement of 13 per cent. and boosted ! net operating income 104 per cent.| Deductions of $54,768.20 were made | from gross, leaving a decrease in | earnings of $43,242.25. 1 Earnings for the eight months are ‘of more value. Operating revenues gained $656,787.4 68, or 10.6 per cent. At the same time' operating expenses advanced $987,362.72, or 18 per cent. ‘The higher operating expenses, taxes | and depreciation figures lowered net operating income by 47 per cent. After all deductions from gross, net reve- nues were $38,207.31 in the red, against | | @ net increase a year ago of $347,656.02 Directors Vote Dividends. ; Directors of the Carpel Corp. have | declared a quarterly dividend of 50 ents per share, payable October 15 / to shareholders of record October 6./ The stock is listed on the Washing- | ton Stock Exchange and is selling at $25 a share. The American Security & Trust ‘Co. will pay a quarterly dividend of | 2 per cent on October 10 to stock- holders of record on September 30. | The stock is now being quoted ex- | dividend on the Washington Ex- ehange. | The firm of K. S. Wales & Co. of | this city is participating in the sale | of 25,000 shares of Commercial Bank- ing Corp., Philadelphia, $120 cumula- tive preferred stock, with warrants | which may be exercised in 1939, 1940 L or 1941, While Baltimore reported a drop o{ 9 per cent in clearings during the past week, Richmond clearings were 12 per cent above the mark reached | In the same week a year ago. Sales and Collections. Marked gains in total net sales md s higher rate of collections on ac- eounts receivable in August, 1936, as compared with August a year ago were reported by manufacturers in the monthly joint study of the Na- tional Association of Credit Men and the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, Department of Commerce. Total net sales of 528 manufac- turers throughout the country reg- istered an increase of over 18 per eent in August, 1936, from August, 1935. Without adjustment for sea- sonal influences August, 1936, sales registered an increase of about 1 per cent from July of this year. Percentages of collections on ac- eounts receivable submitted by 511 manufacturers were higher for Au- gust, 1936, than for both August a year ago and July of this year. Dur- ing August this year the manufac- turers reporting collected 81 per cent of their accounts receivable outstand- ing on the first of that month as com- pared with 78 per cent collected dur- ing August last year and 80.6 per cent collected during July of this Atlantic Shippers to Meet. ‘The forty-first regular meeting of the Atlantic States Shippers Advis- ory Board will be held in the Lord Baltimore Hotel, Baltimore, October 8. (Comptled by the Associated Press.) BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financ.as Writer, NEW YORK, October 3.—Stocks soared today in the most active mar- ket witnessed in several months. Led by the steels and rails, gains of frac- tions to around 3 points were distrib- uted over a wide front. Numerous new six-year highs were recorded in the buying rush and dur- ing almost the entire first hour the ticker tape was from one to four min- utes behind transactions on the floor of the exchange. Transfers approxi- mated 1,600,000 shares. The turnover was the largest for a Saturday session since the early part of the year. Biocks of 1,000 to 10.000 shlrps changed hands in rapid suc- cession. | There were few profit-taking inter- | ludes, but these only slowed the pace momentarily. When such sales were absorbed, the leaders resumed the | elimb. ‘Wall Street attributed the sharp up- turn principally to relief over the re- | fusal of markets to become unsettled when the important gold standard | countries revised their currencies | downward and to highly satisfactory domestic business developments. Outstanding in the forward pu were U. S. Steel, Bethlehem Nationa Steel, Crucible, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Santa Fe, N. Y.
