Wood- ring Attended Dinner Given for Phila- delphians—Stones Return. HE Chilean Ambassador, Senor Don Manuel Trucco, enter- tained a small company at dinner last evening at the May- flower in honor of the former minister of agrieulture of Chile, Senor Maximo Valdes, and Senora de Valdes and their son-in-law and daughter, Senor and Senora Victor Balmaceda, who are spend- ing a few days in the Capital. The Ambassador came to the Capital yesterday from his Summer home at Bluemont. The Soviet Ambassador and Mme. Troyanovsky gave a dinner party last evening in compliment to the newly appointed secretary of the United States Legation in Latvia and Mrs. Barl Packer. The Ambassador, who has been ill, was unable to attend the dinner. Other guests were the Latvian Minister and Mme. Bilmanis, the Lithuanian Charge d’Affaires, Dr. Mikas Bagdonas; the chief of the Near Eastern affairs division of the State Department, Mr. Robert F. Kelley; Mr. Louis Malone and the counselor of the Soviet Embassy and Mme. Oumansky, the military attache and Mme. Burzin and the second secretary and Mme. Gokhman. The Secretary of War and Mrs. Harry H. Woodring were among the guests at the dinner given last evening at the Shoreham by Mr. Carroll B. Merriam, a director of the Reconstruction Finance Corp., and Mrs. Merriam, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Willlam H. Kingsley of Philadelphia. The other guests were the Solicitor Gen- eral and Mrs. Stanley Reed, the chairman of the Home Owners’ Loan Corp. and Mrs. John H. Fahey, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel T. Bledsoe of New York and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Thorpe. Mr. Justice and Mrs. Harlan Fiske Stone have opened their home here for the Winter, after spending the late Summer at their place at Isle au Haut, Me. Senator and Mrs. Burton K. Wheeler will return today to their house at 3727 Jocelyn street after spending the season im their Summer home at Glacier Park. Representative Edward T. Taylor of Colorado, who has been at his home- in Glenwood Springs during the Summer, has come to Washington for a few days and is staying at the Roosevelt Hotel. Col. M. Hirata, the Japanese military attache, is occupying an apartment at the Wardman Park Hotel. Gen. and Mrs. Albert C. Dalton are spending 2 few days with Mrs. Mary Mahoney on their way from New Rochelle, N. Y., to their home in Hampton, Va. Capt. William Stanley McClintic, U. S. N., and Mrs. McClintic have taken an apartment in the Anchorage for this month while Capt. McClintic is recuperating fgom a several months’ illness. Capt. and Mrs. McClintic have many friends in Washington, where they lived before Capt. McClintic took command of the U. S. S. Indianapolis in 1934. The newly appointed first secretary of the Legation of El Salvador, Miguel Pena Valle, has arrived in Washington and has taken an apartment at the Roosevelt Hotel. The former first secretary of the legation, Senor Don Roberto D. Melendez, has been appointed consul general of El Salvador to Belgium, and with Senora de Melendez is now in Antwerp. Miss Reba Doughton, daughter of Representative and Mrs. Robert L. Doughton of Laurel Springs, 8. C., has returned to her apartment in Wardman Park Hotel after spending several weeks with her parents in their Southern home. Representative and Mrs. Doughton will come to Washington | for the Winter season after the election. Miss Mary E. Dempsey and Miss Murill Dempsey of Santa Fe, N. Mex., daughters of Representative and Mrs. John J. Dempsey, are in their apartment at the Wardman Park Hotel. Mr. Seymour Howard, son of Capt. Herbert S. Howard, U. 8. N, and Mrs. Howard sailed last week for England to resume his studies at Trinity College, at Cambridge, where he is a member of the senior class. Miss Harriet Dye Bride of Mr. Whelan In Caldwell Hall T!ll wedding of Miss Harriet M. Dye, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard B. Dye, and Mr. Thomas J. Whelan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Whe- Jan of New York, took place at 10| o'clock yesterday morning at Caldwell Hall of Catholic University, and was followed by a wedding breakfast at the Shoreham Hotel. Rev. Ignatius Smith, O. She wore a gown of brown velvet with hat of the same material, and her flowers were talisman roses. Miss Marguerite Ermerins of Wash- ington was the bride’s only attendant, and she was gownec in gray velvet. Mr. Alec Whelan, brother of the bride- groom, served as best man. Following a wedding trip to Phila- delphia and Baltimore, Mr. and Mrs. Whelan will make their home at 2504 ‘Tenth street northeast. The bride at- tended the schools of Washington, and Mr. Whelan was graduated from Cath- olic University in 1933. He was promi- nent as a foot ball hero and is now a member of the coaching staff of the university. German Ambassador Host Next Week ‘The German Ambassador, Herr Hans Luther, will be host to a small company at an informal dinner party Tuesday evening in honor of Dr. Hugo Eckener, captain of the German Zeppelin Hindenberg, who will arrive here tomorrow to visit until the mid- dile of the week. The Ambassador will entertain again Wednesday evening for the Bishop Marahrens of Han- over, Germany, and Bishop Meiser of Munich, who are here to attend a world convention of Lutherans in New York. Bishop Marahrens is pres- ident of the convention and Bishop Meiser is general secretary. The Ambessador will have as his guest today Dr. Carl Stroelin, mayor the festivities planned for German day, a celebration held every year at Madison Square Garden, New York.
