OF N. B. C. MARKED Review of Broadcasting to Feature Presentations. Time Shifts Programs. N. B. C. network, which this celebrates its 10th anniver- sary, is doing most of it through special programs. One of these gets underway Monday at 9 pm. Called “Ten Years in Retrospect,” it is to provide a weekly review of the progress in broadcasting. The opener will recall the Dempsey - Tun- ney fight, the Lindbergh reception and the first Rose Bowl game broad- cast in 1927. The celebration will reach a climax November 15, the date on which N. B. C.’s initial broadcast was made 10 years ago. Each week's broadcast until that time will reveal the type and scope of the advances made by N. B. C. in the 10 years of its existence. NE'I'WORK broadcasting schedules will undergo their semi-annual shift September 27, when New York returns to Eastern standard time. Nearly all regular network features will come into Washington an hour later than at present, although a few are to be given other spots on the broadcast schedule. . B. C. and the Intercity Group have finally ironed out their differences about the Good Will Court broadcasts which make their debut on N. B. C. tomorrow night as a substitute for Maj. Bowes' amateur shows. As a result N. B, C. and the Inter- City Group will carry the programs, which means they will come into ‘Washington over both WRC and ‘WOL. Tomorrow night, however, ‘WOL will broadcast only the first 80 minutes of the hour program. NEW show called “What's in a Name” will make its debut over WRC and WFBR in Baltimore Sep- tember 28. The program will be broadcast twice weekly—Monday and Fridays from 7:45 to 8 p.m. On each program, “The Oracle of Names” and narrator, will give the background history and significance of the names of famous people. Den- nis Connell, Maude Howell Smith and John Shelley have been chosen for the cast, but WRC is looking for other promising talent for special character parts. Nature’s Children Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia). BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. AIRYLIKE flowers of bright blue, bell-shaped, love to peep from almost inaccessible crev- ices of rocks where dashing waters maintain a continuous spray, or perhaps in some lovely meadow or shady spot where fairies love to romp and play; the blue bells of Scotland | or lady’s thimble may be found from June until September. The harebells are a thirfty family and develop many, many seed chil- | dren. They are in egg-shaped, pend- ant, three-celled capsules. When they are ready to go places they, being so light, travel with ease upon the pass- ing breeze. The mode of transportation is ideal. | You will find the dainty blue bells swaying from their long stems in the | Arctic regions of Europe, Asia and America. They flourish in Canada, from there to New Jersey and Penn- sylvania and Westward to Nebraska, to Arizona, in the Rockies, and from | this point to California, in the Sierra | Nevadas. If you have a spot in your own gar- | den that is damp and shaded, why not have your own fairy circle? Through many thousands of years | S the flower has learned how to bend its dainty head before the wind, and though the 6 to 36 inch stem seems fragile, it is flexible and straightens up after the storm is over. ‘The harebell has her five petals together to form a bell. This is prog- ress for the famly, for it assures the flowers protection from the rain and preserves the pollen for the refresh- ment of {nsect guests, giving & han- dicap to those pilfering insects who are noted housebreakers. If you will look deep into the face of the harebell you will see that the important visitor must enter the flower door at the place where the stigmas will come in contact with the pollen-laden plush coat of the guest. Harebells are clever advertisers, too. Their blue is the favorite color “of bees and butterfiies and many otherg of the flying squad. Watch how the guests creep around the flower until they can grasp the pistil, in order to sip the nectar flowing at the base of the bell. It is at this time you can even see the cloud of pollen from the surrounding stamens that descends upon the happy guest and also upon the immature pistil. ‘When the flower is old all the pollen has been removed and the pistil now Tesembles the clapper of a bell. The stigma at its top is now in three horizontal lobes, which are very sticky on the under side, and when an in- sect comes calling, powdered with « pollen, the grains stick to the waiting stigma. If by any chance insects have been unable to call at the right date the stigmas bend backward and reach the left-over pollen of the flower and (Copyright, 1936. Japanese National Theater. TH!B should have been a happy night, a happy trip, but a cloud dimmed Mrs. Flagg's gladness. For more than 25 years she had | worn this deepen- ing fear pinned to her heart, as if by suffering secretly, courageously in an- ticipation, she might be spared the accomplished fact. It had been a small cloud when, 25 years ago, she had married Pa- trolman John Flagg of the vil- lage of Lakedale, now the industrial center Irondale. Unobtrusively |she turned and studied the man beside her in the front seat of the car. He was hand- somer today than he had been 25 years before, she thought. The thick, crisp hair was iron-gray now, that boyish face sculptured by responsi- bility and honesty of purpose. He not only capably filled the post of chief of police, but he looked the part. ‘This was their twenty-fifth wed- ding anniversary. At her earnest in- sistence they were driving to the city to spend the night and as much of the following day as Capt. Flagg could be persuaded to spare from his duties. ‘Theater, dinner and shopping had been her excuse. “Oh, John,” she protested as the captain switched on the police radio. “Do we have to listen to that all the ‘way to Chicago?” “Now, Martha,” soothed Capt. Flagg. “I just want to see how the boys are getting on.” * x kX % THE radio didn’t really annoy her, but for this one night she wanted to be free of even the symbol of fear. “If you haven’t trained that police force so they can take care of any- thing that comes up for one day, you're a poor chief of police,” Mrs. Flagg scolded tenderly. “It wouldn’t be for lack of good example. If there’s been a dangerous job to do and you haven't been in the thick of it, I haven't heard of it.” Diffidently she slipped her hand under her husband’s arm. He gave her a quick, warm look of under- standing and pressed her imprisoned hand tightly against his side. The radio droned on, making routine contacts and reports. Suddenly the announcer’s voice came sharp and urgent: o North Patrol! Calling North Patrol! Carload of baidits holding up crowd at Melody Dance Hall, River road and highway 66. More later.” * kX X Tm: upuln lumd forward and snapped a swil “Hedges, Hedges, "hu-w insistently. “Hedges speaking” came back the deep, resonant voice. “This is Capt. Ill hold them till the North Patrol gets there. Isn't it early in the season for that place to be open?” “Private party, I think. Good luck, sir.” The radio droned on. good. It was separation from John, not death, she feared. If this night|a meant the end of both of them, it held no terrors for her. She had only to stay close to share the dan- ger. Lights out, the car drifted quietly into a hollow, slid softly off the road into the sheltering darkness of a tree’s low branches. before them the straight ridge of the dance hall roof cut squarely across the stars. Capt. Flagg cut the ignition and noiselessly slid out of the car. As he turned to speak to Martha he found her standing beside him. “I'm going with you, Joh said in a breathless little rush. she “r can't—I won't stay back here and |DRIVI hear shots and sit wondering if you are lying dead or dying. I've stood it for 25 years. I can’t tonight.” Capt. Flagg pulled her to him. “Martha, I didn't know it was like this with you all these years. It's been a hard life for you.” “I've been happy with you,” Martha | p; answered stoutly. * ok k% SIDE by side they stole up the road. Presently her husband’s hand stopped her, They stood at the edge of the parking space beside the dance hall. The hall itself was in dark- ness save where a solitary exit light bloomed bloodily. “Wait here!” whispered Capt. Flagg and was gone, lost instantly in the maze of parked cars. She started after him, sheer nervousness hammering at her ribs. As she paused in the shelter of the car nearest the steps she saw the dark blur that was Capt. Flage, bent almost double, going up the | s wooden steps—so well concealed that her eyes ached with the effort to keep him placed. From within the hall came an almost inaudible murmur of penned, restless humanity, crested occasionally by a | b gasp or a giggle or shuffie of feet. Capt. Flagg reached the doorway. ‘Without warning the lights flared on with the violence of an explosion and pandemonium broke loose. In a split second Martha was up the steps beside her husband in the doorway, blinded and deafened. Amazingly the orchestra broke.out with Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” and familiar, friendly voices took up the cry, “Congratulations, congratula- tions!” Long after Martha to ask, “But how did you know we'd come? “Oh, we knew the captain,” they said with pride and confidence, In that moment Martha knew fear was not too great a price to pay for the love of & man in whom & whole community trusted so im- Atop the hill| !
