" HOUSES TRIMMED IN BRIGHT COLORS Gay Combinations Provide Variety to Suburban Structures. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 19.—Gay and somewhat unusual colors are ap- pearing in the exterior trim of some of the new houses being built this year in the suburbs of New York. Bright yellow shutters against gray stone or mandarin red against a stone front of reddish hue may sound a bit startling, but they give attractive ‘variety to a group which would other- ‘Wwise appear monotonous. For painting the exterior of a house in Colonial or English cottage style, white still holds first place in the home owner’s favor. It is cheerful and looks well among green shrub- bery and trees. The white with green blind combination, however, is some- times varied by gray with red; and bright accents are being used with white to give individuality—shutters appearing in bright blue, brownish Ted and yellow. The front door is often painted the same color as the shutters. Window sashes and frames are frequently white, but a different effect is ob- tained by painting them English red or medium blue, both of which har- monize with white, ivory, tan or gray clapboards. Stucco houses in grays and soft yellows offer an excellent background for shutters and window trims in varied colors, Brown is good on stucco houses, and blue-green or dull blue gives a soft, weathered effect for & mellowed Colonial exterior. Sometimes two colors are combined In the trim. On a brick house with the trim mainly in ivory, blue gray may be used for the bases and capitols (or tops) of the porch supports. A white house with slate trim may have ;}lme top of the porch railing in medium ue. Rich chocolate brown trim com- bines well with ivory and still better with white clapboards. With dark, antiqued bricks, a mellow cream or tan harmonizes rather better than white, which often gives too great a contrast. Screens, when properly painted, can be made to contribute rather than detract from the general uppearance of a house. One stone coitage in Forest Hills has its screen frames painted a cheerful red which contrasis strikingly with the ivory trim. Llie is another variation from the usual @§reen chosen for screens. Corner Cupboards Useful. Many a dining room can be im- Proved in looks and made more use- ful by building in corner cupboards. These may be real places to store china and glass, or they may be purely decorative and contain just a few choice bits for display. If the former, it would be better to have doors to shut the view: if the latter, however, no doors should be used, and the shelves can be cut out in delicate patterns to add to the decorative effect. Nine chances out of ten, you have no idea how impor- tant this question is. Just so long as the burner continues to feed oil into your boiler and your house stays warm, you think your system is func- tioning perfectly. As a matter of fact, if your boiler is oversized for the kind of Lurner you have, you stand in danger of one of the sorriest messes it has been our misfortune to witness. One | day, quite without warning, vour sys- .um may begin doing tricks—backfir- | ing. as it were, and sending a greasy { 800t all through your house. When it | happens, of course, you will blame | the oil burner, but the real fault is in the firebox of your heating equip- | | ment. ‘The combustion chamber o: a boiler must be built up, when it is con- verted from oal-burning epparatus to an automatic oil-burning =:stem. | | The proper sizing of the two units is very important, although rot until | recently has any manufacturer under- | | taken to come into your home, study | | your present equipment, and do a | matching job when hey install the | oil burner. Gravatte Realtor National hitching a spirited carriage horse to a wheelless buggy. Why waste the scientific splendor of the one on the | inadequacy of the other? The makers of the equipment we have in mind, although selling cil | burners, are interested in the operation of the whole system. They believe if | they can help owners of heating sys- tems to extract the maximum heat from the minimum of fuel, they will increase the popularity of their burn- ers, and rightly, although the boilr, in which the heat is engendered, is per- | haps three-quarters responsible for | this, A firebox should have the ability | not only to burn every drop of oil fed ' to it by the burner, but to store up quantities of heat besidcs, The excess heat is slowly released when the burner is not operating. Terrifically high temperatures maintained inside the combustion chamber will make cer- tain that every particle (znites, whether the oil is continuing to pour in or not. If no ol is wasted in carbon deposit on the sides of the firebox, the system will use less oil, naturally. A new specially designed and minutely engineered boiler, which is said to hoard heat as a miser hoards his gold, provides the perfect corfi- panion for this company’s burner. But no installation of these manu- facturers is other than tailor-made, conforming with the size and shape of each individual heating plant. The trick, it seems, is in perfect co-ordi- nation of the parts of & heating sys- tem, so that no unit can get tem- peramental and wreck the good work of the others! EVmY time you move, it means getting new rugs. But oh! the headaches in getting what you want for a reasonable price! Up until recently a rug of the exactly right proportions to suit an outsized or odd-shaped living rcom was well beyond the purse of the average family. Broadloom carpeting, which can be ordered in any size at all, was the usual solution to the problem. Now, however, there are patterned rugs available in 23 different sizes, one of which must fit any Toom, no matter how extraordinary. The company which makes these rugs—in three qualities and thirty patterns—says frankly that rooms were not designed to suit rug-manu- facturers who insist on 9 by 13, come ‘what may. i “It 1sn't,” says this forward-think- ing firm, “up to the architect to de- sign his rooms differently to accora- modate existing rug sizes. It is rather up to the rug manufacturer and the dealer to supply rugs of color. BSizes begin at 27 by 54 inches and go all the way up to 12 feet by 21 feet.
