A—14 wx MORRIS PLAN HEAD T0 ATTEND PARLEY Willard G. Barker, Chief of D. C. Bank, to Speak at Hot Springs. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Willard G. Barker, president of the Morris Plan Bank of Washington, leaves here today for Hot Springs, W. Va., to attend the seventeenth annual conven- E tion of the Mor- ris Plan Bankers | Association, at the Homestead, September 20-23 He is down on the program to speak on “Pub- lic Relations.” About 250 of the system's execu- tives will be pres- ent. Dr. Claude L. Benner, vice president and economist of the Continental- American Life Insurance Co. will de- liver an important message on “Pres- ent Day Economics,” and Lewis F. Gordon, nationally-known authority on “public relations,” will conduct a forum on that subject. Dr. Luther Harr, secretary of bank- ing in Pennsylvania, and Frank M. Totten, vice president of the Chase National Bank of New York, are among others scheduled to make im- portant addresses. The delegates will also hear from Arthur J. Morris, founder, and other executives. Power Bonds Being Called. Holders of Potomac Electric Power | general and refunding mortgage gold bonds, series B, paying 6 per cent and due April 1, 1953, will do well to re- member that these bonds have been called for redemption on October 1. After that date they will cease to bear interest. The outstanding bonds of this issue will be redeemed at 105 and accrued interest, in fact, have been payable at the redemption price for some time. The Potomac Electric Power Co. an- nounced early in the Summer that the price of 105, together with interest to October 1, would be paid at any time the bonds were turned in. it not being necessary to wait until October 1 to turn them into cash. Many holders have already pre- sented their bonds with the remain- ing coupons, receiving payment in full. The redemption date is now very near. Failure to cash the bonds and reinvest the funds will mean the loss of interest on any new in- vestment that might be made at once. Nothing will be gained by holding the bonds until the actual redemption date. The bonds have been listed for years on the Washington Stock Exchange and have a fine investment record. The Power company put out an is- sue carrying a lower interest in place | of the old bonds. Banks Enter Mortgage Field. Commercial banks and insurance ecompanies, as well as individuals, have re-entered the farm mortgage financing field in substantial volume, according to the Farm Credit Ad- ministration. Its survey shows that while Fed- eral Land Banks and Land Bank| Commissioner, with loans totaling $102,000,000 still ranged first in vol- ume during the first five months of the current calendar year, commer- cial banks financed $79,200,000 of farm mortgages compared with $47.- 900,000 in the corresponding 1934 pe- riod, and insurance companies jumped $18,000,000 in the first five months of 1934 to $46,000,000 in the like 1936 period. Individuals now have resumed their former front-rank position in the farmi mortgage field, the report shows. Mortgages recorded by individuals amounted to $115,000,000 in the first five months of 1936. Sees Assessments Unchanged. Chairman Leo T. Crowley, of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., as- serts that no early reduction in the present assessment of 1-12 of 1 per cent on average bank deposits for deposit insurance is likely. In explaining his objection to the lightening of the deposit insurance charges on banks, Chairman Crow- ley said he is not opposed to an ad- Justment eventually, but that the time for such change has n.t arrived yet and will not have arrived until it has been demonstrated that the banking system will be maintained permanently on a sound basis. “It seems only logical to me,” he said, “that we continue the present rate for a reasonable period of time before any change is made. That period should be sufficiently long to test fairly the effectiveness of an {mproved quality of bank supervision.” Farmers Out of Depression. The farmers’ total cash income amounted to $735,000,000 in July as against $470,000,000 a year ago. To- tal income, for the first seven months, ‘was $4,024,000,000 this year as against $3,427,000,000 last year, a . increase ©of 17.4 per cent. Despite a rise from June to July in the prices of goods bought by the farmers, these prices were lower than a year ago. This was also the case for the first seven months. As a result, the farmers’ purchasing power showed a greater increase over a year ago than their income. The farmers’ purchasing power in July was 60.3 per cent higher than a year ago and, for the first seven months, 22.3 per cent higher. In July, according to the Alexander Hamilton Institute the farmers were, for the time being, fully out of the depression since their purchasing W. G. Barker power was 4.7 per cent above the pre- depression level in 1929, Heard in Financial District. ‘Washington will send a large dele- gation of life insurance men to Bos- ton next week for the annual con- vention. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financia, Writer. NEW YORK. September 19.—Buy- ing batteries were unlimbered in to- day's brief stock market session and advances of fractions to a point or. more were registered over a wide ter- rain. Rail, steel, motor, utility, merchan- dising and specialty issues led 1. sortie. New highs for the past \ear or longer were posted by a number cf the leaders. Transfers were around 800,000 shares. It was the most active Saturday | session in more than a month, Business and industrial optimism | apparently inspired traders, who for | the past several weeks have been idle on the sidelines, to resume operations. While some market commentators were inclined to skepticism regarding the near-term outlook, the action of the list as a whole in the face of con- siderable profit-taking seemed highly encouraging to recovery forces, Outstanding in the forward march were Santa Fe, Delaware & Hudson Atlantic Coast Line, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Illinois Central, U. October, 11.94; December, 11.98; 11.96; March, 11.85. | January 11.94; July, i There was a fair volume of business | at the opening, with prices lower un- der overnight hedging from the South and scattering liquidation. Near months made new lows for the movement, with December selling off , to 11.96 and active months gcnerlllv showing net losses of about 4 to 6 points during early trading. Offerings were absorbed by trade buying and | covering. The market was holding | fairly steady at the end of the first half hour, although prices were within a point or two of the lowest. Private crop advices from the South- | west said that while the rains had broken the drought of more than two months in many portions of Texas | they came too late to benefit cotton to |any great extent. The crop is prac- tically made in most of the State. Overnight reports from Worth street, indicated fair sales of print cloth, with prices generally holding firm.
